“Right. You catch on quick, don’t you, Lanta?”
“Mmm.” She was patronizing me and I knew it. Bernadette was a master of the art. “One question. How do I know which folk wants to do what?”
“That’s easy. The aides and nurses will tell you.”
“LVNS,” I said, definitely trying to impress her this time.
“LVNs are nurses, dear. Licensed vocational ones. So be sure and check in at the nurses’ station first. Frieda, our head LVN, will be a great help to you.” She smiled but something told me it wasn’t quite genuine. “Off I go now. You let me know if you have any more questions. I’ll be in my office. Well, unless I’m not.” A small chuckle escaped her lips.
I nodded again.
“Then you’ll just have to come find me. Wherever I am. All right, dear?” She wasn’t looking at me when she said this but away at something beyond me. Then she hurried out into the corridor like Alice’s white rabbit and disappeared.
I think I would have liked the rabbit better
