“Boyfriends?”
“Yes, the opposite sex. Should I define boyfriends further for you?”
“If I tell you I do, will you let it go?”
Gertrude looked right into my eyes. She had piercing blue ones. It felt as if she could see through me, discover all my secrets. Like I did with her damn journal. I guess fair was fair. “I don’t have any. Yet.”
“Well, a pretty girl like you shouldn’t have any trouble once you start looking.”
Can we change the subject, please?
She shifted in her seat, asked if I’d care for a short walk to the pier and back. “My legs get stiff if I sit too long. Besides, the rush to buy is over.”
I glanced at the empty parking lot and agreed with her. A walk would be good for both of us and take up some time. I took her arm and helped her out of the chair. She grabbed her cane from the table, but somehow it slipped from her grip and fell with a clatter onto the pavement, surprising a seagull that flew off in the mist and turned out to sea.
