A Last Day

Hakim quickly took out the piece of the letter from his pocket and tore it into pieces. "We shouldn't let this letter divide us," he said, trying to subdue the rising tension.

Rizman nodded in agreement. "Exactly. We've faced challenges together and come out stronger. We need to stick together now more than ever."

Sarah took a deep breath, her initial worry subsiding. "You're right. We can't let this get to us. We have to focus on surviving and completing the trial."

Ezat, still somewhat skeptical, finally relented. "Fine. Let's keep moving and find a way out of here."

With renewed determination, they packed up the survival tools, map, compass, medical supplies, and the small stash of food. The tension from the note lingered, but they pushed it aside, focusing on the task at hand.

"So, where should we go next?" Sarah asked, looking around the cave.

"We're at a dead end right now. Are we missing something?" Ezat questioned, glancing at the walls.

Hakim rubbed his chin, deep in thought. "I don't think we should go back. There might be something here that can help us move forward."

"Hey, look at this," Sarah said, pointing to a wall. "Why does this wall have a keyhole on it?"

Hakim's eyes lit up. "Good eye, Sarah. Let's check it out." He moved toward the wall and examined the keyhole closely. "There must be a key around here somewhere."

As he looked around, he noticed something under the chest. He flipped the chest over and found a key glued to the bottom. "Here it is. The key," Hakim said, grabbing it and holding it up for everyone to see.

"Nice find," Rizman said, impressed.

Hakim inserted the key into the keyhole and turned it. With a loud click, the wall began to shift and slowly slid open, revealing a hidden passageway.

"Alright, let's see where this leads," Hakim said, leading the way into the new passage.

The passage was narrow and winding, with walls covered in ancient carvings. As they walked, the air grew cooler and the light dimmer, forcing them to rely on their torches. After what felt like an eternity, they emerged into a large chamber filled with intricate stone statues and more carvings.

In the center of the room stood a large stone door, similar to the one they had encountered before. This door, however, had three keyholes, each with a different symbol above it.

"This must be the final challenge," Hakim said, examining the door.

"Look, there are three pedestals around the room," Sarah pointed out. "Each one has an inscription and a slot for a key."

They split up and began searching the chamber for clues. After a few minutes, Ezat called out. "I think I found something!"

They gathered around Ezat, who had discovered a hidden compartment in the wall. Inside were three keys, each with a unique symbol engraved on it.

Hakim took the keys and distributed them to his teammates. "Let's do this together."

They inserted the keys into the slots on the pedestals and turned them simultaneously. The stone door rumbled and slowly creaked open, revealing a passageway bathed in light.

Stepping through the door, they found themselves outside, the fresh air a stark contrast to the damp, musty cave. As they emerged, they saw a small village ahead, eerily empty with several houses standing silent and still.

Hakim looked at his teammates, a sense of accomplishment washing over him. "We did it. We survived the mini-trial."

Rizman clapped him on the shoulder. "And we did it together."

Sarah smiled, her earlier fears forgotten. "Let's find a place to rest and regroup."

They split up to search for a place to sleep. As they wandered through the village, they noticed that it was newly built but completely abandoned.

Hakim walked up to one of the houses and pushed the door open. "It looks like this place was just left. Everything is still in order."

Rizman joined him, peering inside. "Strange. Why would a new village be deserted?"

Sarah approached another house, examining the surroundings. "Maybe there's a clue here about what happened. Let's search the houses and see if we can find any information."

Ezat nodded. "And let's also gather any supplies we can find. We don't know how long we'll need to stay here."

They each chose a house to investigate. Inside, they found furniture, food supplies, and personal items, but no signs of a struggle or any indication of why the village was abandoned. As they reconvened, Hakim held up a dusty journal he had found on a table.

"I found this in one of the houses," he said, flipping through the pages. "It's a diary. Maybe it will give us some answers."

Sarah leaned in, curious. "What does it say?"

Hakim skimmed through the entries. "It talks about the villagers preparing for some kind of event. They were expecting something... or someone."

Rizman frowned. "Could it be related to the trials?"

"Possibly," Hakim said, continuing to read. "But there's nothing here that explains why they left. The last entry just stops abruptly."

Ezat looked around nervously. "Let's not take any chances. We should set up a watch schedule and stay alert."

They agreed, dividing the night into shifts. As they settled in for the night, each of them couldn't shake the feeling that the empty village held secrets yet to be uncovered. The trials continued for the remaining three days.

On the fifth day, everyone was still in high spirits. There wasn't much to worry about at the moment. Hakim awoke from his sleep and quickly noticed that Sarah was missing. He roused the others to check their surroundings. They hurriedly began searching for Sarah, anxious about her sudden disappearance. Stepping out of the house, they saw the sky darkening with heavy clouds, signaling an imminent downpour.

"Seriously, where did that girl go by herself?" Ezat grumbled.

"Maybe she's off doing her business somewhere," Rizman said with a smirk.

Hakim frowned, not amused. "This isn't the time for jokes, Rizman. We need to find her before the rain starts."

They spread out, calling Sarah's name as they searched the village. The wind picked up, and the first few drops of rain began to fall. Hakim's worry grew with each passing second.

Suddenly, Rizman called out from near the edge of the village. "Over here! I found something!"

Hakim and Ezat ran over to find Rizman standing by a small, overgrown path leading into the forest. "There are footprints here, heading into the woods," Rizman said, pointing.

"Let's follow them," Hakim decided. "We need to find Sarah and make sure she's safe."

They hurried down the path, the rain starting to come down harder. The forest was dense and dark, making it difficult to see far ahead. They pushed through the underbrush, calling out for Sarah. After what felt like an eternity, they heard a faint voice responding.

"Over here!" Sarah's voice came from a clearing up ahead.

They rushed towards the sound and found Sarah standing near an old, weathered statue. She looked shaken but unharmed. "I found this while I was exploring," she explained, gesturing to the statue. "It seemed important, and I wanted to investigate."

Hakim let out a sigh of relief. "You scared us, Sarah. Next time, let someone know before you go off on your own."

Sarah nodded, looking apologetic. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to worry you all."

Ezat glanced at the statue. "What is this thing, anyway?"

Hakim examined the statue closely. It was a carved figure of an ancient guardian, covered in moss and vines. "It looks like it's been here for centuries. Maybe it's connected to the trials."

Rizman looked around, noticing more carvings on nearby trees. "There might be more to this area than we thought. Let's get back to the village and wait out the storm. We can explore more once the weather clears."

They made their way back to the village, drenched but relieved to be together again. As they huddled in one of the houses, waiting for the rain to pass, they couldn't help but wonder what other secrets the village and the forest held.

"So, tell us, Sarah. What else did you find?" Hakim asked.

"I did find something unusual other than that statue. But, I don't think I can identify it. It seemed like an unidentified creature," Sarah said.

"Was it a bear?" Rizman asked, intrigued.

"I don't know. But that creature was big. It's hard to say what it was," Sarah replied, looking uncertain.

Hakim furrowed his brow. "A big creature? That's unsettling. We need to be extra cautious from now on."

Ezat nodded. "Agreed. We should take turns keeping watch, just in case."

The rain continued to pour outside, the sound of raindrops hitting the roof creating a rhythmic backdrop to their conversation. The group's mood was somber as they contemplated the challenges that lay ahead.

As night fell, they set up a watch rotation, ensuring someone was always awake to keep an eye out for any potential threats. Hakim took the first shift, his mind racing with thoughts of the trials and the mysterious creature Sarah had mentioned.

Hours passed, and the rain eventually subsided. The village was eerily quiet, the only sound being the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind. Hakim's eyes scanned the darkness, looking for any signs of movement.

Suddenly, he heard a faint noise coming from the forest. He tensed, straining to listen. The noise grew louder, and he realized it was the sound of footsteps. He quickly woke Rizman, who was next on the watch rotation.

"Rizman, wake up. I think something's out there," Hakim whispered urgently.

Rizman rubbed his eyes and sat up, grabbing his flashlight. "What did you hear?"

"Footsteps, coming from the forest," Hakim replied, his voice tense.

They both stood by the window, peering into the darkness. The footsteps grew louder, and soon, a figure emerged from the trees. It was a man, looking disheveled and exhausted. He stumbled towards the village, collapsing near one of the houses.

Hakim and Rizman rushed out to help him, wary but concerned. They lifted the man and brought him inside, laying him on a makeshift bed.

"Who are you? What happened to you?" Hakim asked.

The man took a moment to catch his breath before speaking. "My name is Tariq. I was part of another group in the trials. We got separated, and I've been wandering the forest for days."

"What happened to your group?" Rizman asked.

Tariq's eyes were filled with fear. "We encountered something...something big. It attacked us, and we scattered. I don't know if the others made it."

Sarah's face paled. "Could it be the same creature I saw?"

Hakim looked at Tariq, then at his teammates. "We need to stay together and be extra vigilant. Whatever is out there, we have to be prepared."

As the night wore on, they tended to Tariq's injuries and tried to get some rest. The encounter with the mysterious creature and the arrival of Tariq added a new layer of uncertainty to their already challenging situation.

The morning of the sixth day dawned with a heavy fog hanging over the village. The group gathered around Tariq, who was now sitting up and looking slightly better after a night's rest.

"We need to know more about what you saw," Hakim said, his voice calm but firm. "Anything you can tell us will help."

Tariq nodded, his eyes still haunted. "It was unlike anything I've ever seen. It moved silently, but when it attacked, it was like a force of nature. We didn't stand a chance."

Rizman frowned. "Do you think it's still out there?"

"I'm sure of it," Tariq replied. "We need to be careful."

The group spent the morning fortifying their shelter and discussing their next steps. They decided to explore the village further, hoping to find more supplies or clues about the trials.

As they moved through the deserted streets, they came across a larger building that seemed to be a community hall. The door was slightly ajar, and they entered cautiously. Inside, they found maps and documents scattered across tables, as if the previous inhabitants had left in a hurry.

"Look at this," Sarah said, picking up a map that showed the layout of the forest and the surrounding area. "It looks like there are marked locations here. Maybe they're part of the trial."

Hakim studied the map. "We should check these locations. There might be more supplies or clues about the creature."

The group agreed and set out towards the first marked location. As they navigated through the dense forest, the tension among them was palpable. Every snap of a twig or rustle of leaves put them on edge.

After a few hours of walking, they arrived at a clearing with a small, abandoned cabin. They cautiously approached and found the door locked. Rizman tried to force it open, but it wouldn't budge.

"Step back," Hakim said, pulling out a small toolkit they had found in the village. He carefully picked the lock, and the door creaked open.

Inside, they found more survival supplies: food, water, and a few weapons. There was also a journal on the table. Sarah picked it up and began to read.

"It's from someone who lived here," she said. "They talk about the trials and mention the creature. They call it 'the Guardian.' It seems like it's meant to test our survival skills."

Ezat sighed. "Great. So it's not just a random beast. It's part of the trial."

Hakim looked around the cabin. "We should rest here for a while and plan our next move. We have today and tomorrow left. We need to be smart about this. We came this far, we should lay low."

As they settled in, they took turns keeping watch, knowing that the Guardian could strike at any moment. The fear of the unknown hung over them, but they were determined to see the trials through to the end.

On the seventh day, as the trial neared its end, the group was weary but more unified than ever. They had learned to trust each other and work together, despite the challenges. They left Tariq alone as he wanted to find his remaining teammates. He knew he couldn't clear this trial by himself.

As the sun began to set, they gathered around a fire they had built in the center of the village. The air was thick with anticipation and relief.

"We've made it this far," Hakim said, looking at his teammates. "We've faced every challenge head-on and survived. Let's see this through to the end."

Just then, they heard a low growl from the forest's edge. The Guardian emerged from the shadows, its massive form illuminated by the firelight. It looked like a bear but different. It seemed to have some mixed genes, as the fur color was quite reddish.

"Stay calm," Hakim whispered. "Remember what we've learned."

They stood their ground, weapons ready, as the creature approached. It stopped a few feet away, its eyes glowing in the dim light. For a moment, it seemed to study them, as if recognizing their strength and determination.

Then, without warning, it turned and disappeared back into the forest, leaving the group in stunned silence.

"I think it's over," Sarah said softly.

Hakim nodded. "We did it. We passed the trial."

As the final day came to a close, a loud horn sounded in the distance, signaling the end of the trials. They had survived and conquered every challenge thrown at them, proving their resilience and teamwork.

As they prepared to leave the village, Hakim turned to his teammates. "We couldn't have done this without each other. Thank you all."

Sarah smiled. "It's been quite the journey."

Ezat, his usual cynicism softened, said, "We really pulled through. I guess we're not just a bunch of strangers anymore."

Rizman clapped Hakim on the shoulder. "Let's get out of here and find out what comes next."

As they walked away from the village, they saw Tariq waiting at the edge of the forest, his face a mix of relief and gratitude. "You made it," he said. "I knew you would."

Hakim smiled. "And so did you. Let's go home."

"Yeah, you go first. I need to wait for my remaining teammate." Tariq said.

Then, the group walked together, leaving the trials behind them but carrying the lessons and bonds they had forged along the way.

Trivia:

The guardian is bigger than a normal bear. It has a few scar on it and has a reddish fur. Also, it has a long tail like a tiger.
