Escorting Is Done

"Tango 2, this is Hunter 1, standing by for targets."

The radio on the Humvee clearly said that to us. Still, how to mark those targets? It was not like my cheap AR-15 had a laser designator that could mark a target at my will. Besides, what was so hard on shooting at the people that were shooting at us, for god's sake?

[Tip: To Engage on Enemy Targets, Either Mark The Targets Using a Sight or a Laser Designator]

Sight? So, like, I had to aim at the targets while driving this truck? Well, good luck with that, as sure as hell operating an AR-15 while driving a humvee was an easy task. The pistol sight might work, a sight, right?

I pulled my pistol out of my holster and pointed it at one of the general directions of the enemies. The glasses right in front of me started to crack, mainly from the huge amount of bullets hitting the car mercilessly.

"Hunter 1, target marked."

A barrage of 30 mm rounds fell towards the enemy, turning dirt upside down and creating a bunch of sparks from afar. The enemies stopped shooting at us, completely and started focusing their fire towards the helicopter.

"Tango 2, going for a loop."

The AH-64 helicopter flew right on top of our head while dispensing its flares and chaffs. A missile was following the helicopter from behind and the helicopter pilot dodged the missile without any significant effort.

He then hovered in the air after doing the strafing run, waiting for further targets. Meanwhile, I took a large sigh as there was nobody following me from behind anymore, that was too close for my liking.

"Beuer, how can you be so calm?"

"Well, it can be way worse, so yeah, this is very very expected from carrying some kind of important prisoners," I replied.

I meant, the enemy could have ATGM and shot us all, or even worse, a fighter jet exclusively sent just to kill us because they could. We were fighting players here, and as far as I knew, players were more than wild cards. And observing several people's behaviors, it seemed that players could spawn vehicles in any place that they wanted.

"And here I am, thinking you'll lose your cool," Brewster praised.

"Hahaha, expected, to be honest, Sergeant," I replied.

I continued looking for any bridge. At this point, it might be wiser to go off-road since the helicopter was practically our eyes in the sky that wouldn't miss a darn thing unless intended to.

Brewster opened a GPS map using the holographic watch that he wore. He told me to go to the bridge on the east side, that position was guarded with military checkpoints. There was no way a military ambush could be in there.

I nodded and hit the gas even faster. However, things were grim. Two cars were following us from behind. All of them were SUVs with mounted M134 miniguns on top of it, seriously, this kind of situation had never happened to me ever since the Balkans.

CLANG. CLANG. CLANG.

I didn't know how many bullets the armor managed to tank, but the bouncing bullets sounded like a popping popcorn machine. Something needed to be done to the targets behind me, but I couldn't tag them. The windows on the Humvee couldn't even be lowered, the way was the hatch on the roof.

"Could anyone tag the targets?" I asked the passengers.

"On me," One of the soldiers said. "Hunter 1, two vehicles are following us. Engage them."

"Tango 2, targets sighted. Danger close, Hunter 1 engaging. Hydra missiles launched."

A bunch of explosions threw the vehicle away from the road, even exploding the car into minuscule pieces. The car probably wasn't armored, then again, it was a rocket designed to destroy heavily armored vehicles to some extent. If it didn't explode, I should be worried.

"Tango 2, all targets are destroyed."

"Thanks for the assist, Hunter 1," Brewster thanked the attack helicopter operator.

"Tango 2, I will be standing by for targets."

The helicopter circled around right on top of the vehicle, looking for targets. Well, I thought that was the last of them, to be honest. If they were more relentless, they might use something more than a stinger missile, but well, let's just hope that it didn't come to that.

Less stinger, the better. It was not like the stinger was an easy to dodge missile either. I just followed the coordinates that Brewster gave to me and hope for the best. One of the soldiers in the backseat breathed in relief as there were no enemies anymore.

They almost didn't do anything, to be honest. I was the one driving and Brewster was the one calling the close air support. All in all, if I complain, I would be too much bitching about it.

Brewster wasn't lying either, there was indeed a military checkpoint near the bridge. Well, it might be the end of the journey, if I had to be honest. I passed through the checkpoint and continued driving towards the outpost.

==============

Lobaev and Millie arrived way before I arrived. It looked like they weren't under ambush. Well, as expected, the riskiest route would get the biggest risk, I suppose? Well, it didn't matter, we all survived and that was the best outcome.

"Level up again," I uttered.

Where should I distribute these skill points? Strength? With a single-fire weapon like an AR-15, it became absolutely unnecessary. However, it might be a good idea to balance the stats for now. It should give a nice advantage while staying jack-of-all-trades.

Alright, that should be decent enough for now. Even though it was not the best stats all around, it was still good enough for now for a jack of all trades. I wouldn't protest, and it seemed that I had enough money. All and all, it was a good run.
