Unexpected News

"Nadedja, Nadedja! You have to help me!" A clear, female voice sounded outside Nadedja's chambers, situated on the left wing of the Petrova estate.

Pulling her head out of her grimoires, a seventeen year old Nadedja stood up and walked across her room to the door, opening it to see a slightly disheveled Katerina.

Startled, Nadedja first looked around the hall and seeing not a soul, she pulled her sister inside by the hand before she closed the door. "Katerina, what happened to you?"

Katerina impatiently waited until her sister snapped her finger into a small jar of sage, lighting it — she knew it was spelled to allow them privacy. The twins then sat on Nadedja's bed, facing each other.

It was safe to say the sisters would not pass as anything other than twins.

They both stood at five foot six in height, with long, naturally curly dark brown hair. The figure, the facial features, the curves, the slender body — everything was identical.

It was only with their eyes that people could differentiate them.

Katerina had beautiful dark brown eyes while Nadedja had inherited their grandmother's eyes — light green. A green so light her parents thought she was visually impaired at first.

Nadedja's gaze, in Katerina's mind, was gorgeous but too oppressive. It felt as though the older twin was looking straight into your soul when her gaze met yours and it was quite unnerving.

"I am doomed, sister," Katerina began, her voice hesitant. "... It appears that I am with child."

The silence that ensued lasted for at least a minute before Katerina noticed her sister's calm eyes.

"You don't seem surprised." Katerina had a slight narrow of her eyes.

Nadedja stood up, walking over to her window to stare at the garden her mother liked to entertain guests in. "I am not surprised," she replied.

"How?"

Nadedja turned back to look at her sister, wondering if she could trust her. " .. I had a feeling," Nadedja finally said.

Katerina's eyes shone and she leaned forward. "Really? Tell me, sister, tell me! We're going to be all right, isn't that right?" Katerina had always had a fascination for her sister's magic.

Nadedja eyed her twin. Free-spirited Katerina who never thought about the consequences and who had a certain liberty to do whatever she wished.

Her beloved sister.

Katerina's pregnancy wasn't the only vision Nadedja had.

But the other one ...

She absolutely refused to believe it.

The sisters were so close. They loved each other so much. Why would Katerina ever dream of betraying the only person who would ever truly remain in her corner?

For the first time in seventeen years, Nadedja didn't believe in her own vision. Instead, she smiled at Katerina and said, "Of course, sister. We will be all right."

She should have believed.
