Chapter 55
Rachel woke up to a rhythmic beeping sound coming from somewhere near her and when she opened her eyes, she felt as if someone had stuck tiny needles inside her eyelids because of how much they stung. A quick scan of her surroundings told her that she was in a hospital room and there were all kinds of tubes attached to her chest and hands. Her throat was parched and her lips were dry.
“Water,” she croaked as she tried to lift herself to a sitting position. She groaned at the effort because her back ached when she tried to sit.
“You’re awake!”
Rachel turned in the direction of the voice and was pleasantly surprised to see Derek sitting on a chair beside her bed. He looked disheveled yet impossibly handsome.
“You’re here,” she rasped and then coughed because of the dryness in her throat.
