Han Shuo was very familiar with the visitors: Wolf, the Necromancer, and Burt Zili, the former Duke of Boulet Duchy. After Boulet Duchy was annexed by Brettel City, Burt Zili disappeared out of the blue. It was said that this sinister summoner had returned to the headquarters of the Church of Calamity.
The two of them had been waiting for Han Shuo at his mansion in Ossen City for a long time, and now they finally got to meet Han Shuo when he returned from Phoebe's Bootz Merchant Guild.
Their attitude was as respectful as ever. As soon as they saw Han Shuo, they performed the most polite kowtow to Han Shuo. Their behaviour had actually shocked Han Shuo.
"Hey guys, what is this?" Han Shuo was stunned. The two of them seemed to think of him as a senior member of the Church of Calamity. This was quite puzzling to Han Shuo.
"Lord Bryan, we have come under orders to invite you to the headquarters of the Calamity Church. We sincerely hope that your lordship will make a formal journey back with us," Wolf said.
"Oh?" Han Shuo gasped and asked puzzled, "Why have you invited me?"
The mysterious Calamity Church had never publicly announced where its headquarters were located. The countries and religions that were hostile to the Calamity Church had tried everything they could, but still could not come close to locating their headquarters. To be suddenly visited and beckoned there by Wolf and Burt Zili came as quite a shock, even to Han Shuo.
"Lord Bryan, your magnificent deed outside the Southern border City and your noble act of destroying the Shrine of Ice has reached the ears of our Pope. As soon as His Holiness heard of your return, he instructed us to do our best to invite your lordship to the Church of Calamity to discuss important matters with you. We sincerely hope that Lord Bryan will not decline the invitation. There was an undeniable awe in Wolf's eyes. It seemed that Han Shuo's thunderous actions after returning to the Profound Continent had indeed astonished the Calamity Church.
"Why do I have to travel to the Calamity Church? If your pope is sincere, he should come and meet me personally," considering Han Shuo's strength, the Calamity Church on the Profound Continent did not seem spectacular to him. It was justified for Han Shuo to speak so arrogantly.
Wolf must have been thoroughly briefed before making his way over, because he did not get angry when Han Shuo said those words. On the contrary, he feigned hospitality and explained, "In fact, His Holiness the Pope has been planning to personally seek you out and have a chat with you for the past five years. This time was no exception. When he heard the news of your return, he was genuinely prepared to come here in person."
"So? Why didn't he? Why did he insist that I go to him instead?" Han Shuo said in a deep voice, his eyebrows knitted together.
Han Shuo had no fear that the Church of Calamity would betray him, not with all the power he possessed. Even with his two injured avatars, Han Shuo had full confidence in his self-preservation. It was just that he had been preoccupied with the affairs of the Lancelot Empire these past few days. He had no plans to leave there any time soon.
"Before His Holiness came over, he had used an altar to communicate with our god. We lowly members do not know the details of the conversation. However, His Holiness told us that it was our God who personally gave the order to earnestly invite you to the headquarters of the Church of Calamity. It is only through the altar at our headquarters that you can communicate with the God we pray to," Wolf explained in an extremely respectful manner.
Suddenly, Han Shuo had a few thoughts.
For days, Han Shuo had worried about the matter of the Shrine of and the Spider Goddess Rose. It was clear to him that neither Spider Goddess Rose nor the Shrine of Ice was something he could fight alone. If either of them come to this place in person, Han Shuo knew that he would have absolutely no chance of winning in a fight. He had a clear understanding of the strength he possessed and knew that he simply could not stand against either of these powerhouses at this time.
After pondering for a long time, Han Shuo came up with the idea of joining one of the great powerhouses for the time being; while he still lacked his desired level of strength, he would use someone else's power to fight against the Shrine of Ice, the Spider Goddess, and the Church of Light, which he would soon be attacking.
His two avatars cultivated the Element of Death and the Edict of Destruction. What's more, the physical body of his Avatar of Death was formed from the Skeletal Staff. After his mental transformation, Han Shuo felt that it would be much easier to communicate with the powers on the side of the two Overgods of Death and Destruction. The establishment that the two Overgods had on the Profound Continent was the Church of Calamity.
Han Shuo was almost certain that he wasn't the only one thinking about this when Wolf spoke. It seemed that the powers of the two Overgods had the same intention. They probably wanted to officially extend an olive branch to him through the Church of Calamity.
After much thought, Han Shuo smiled and said calmly, "So it seems. All right, I will accept your invitation. However, you will have to be patient. As soon as I take care of things on my end, I will follow you to the headquarters of the Calamity Church right away."
"Thank you, Lord Bryan!" Wolf had obviously relaxed when Han Shuo accepted the invitation. Immediately after, he flattered Han Shuo, "Lord Bryan, to tell you the truth, I knew we were both on the same side from the first time we met. Your lordship has done two great deeds since your reappearance. All the cardinals high in the Church have been shaken by the reports that have spread far and wide. And now there are gods who have directly requested your presence. Lord Bryan is indeed more than excellent! If possible, we sincerely hope that Lord Bryan will give us both your guidance.
"Please give us your guidance, Lord Bryan," Burt Zili, who had been silent the whole time, said with a fawning smile.
The duo had done their utmost to help Han Shuo since five years ago, investing a lot of their capital in Han Shuo, such as helping Han Shuo's Brettel City annex all seven grand duchies. The two of them were more excited than anyone else in the world to see Han Shuo make a magnificent comeback, and for the Church of Calamity to give him unprecedented importance.
Han Shuo smiled as he looked at the duo and nodded. He patted Wolf's shoulder and said smilingly, "Smart people usually have good luck. Rest assured, if opportunities arise in the future, I will not forget the favours you two have done for me in the past."
"Thank you! Thank you Lord Bryan!" Wolf and Burt Zili were overjoyed at Han Shuo's words and immediately thanked Han Shuo.
Han Shuo had not officially joined the Church of Calamity yet, but his actions had shaken all the high-ranking members of the Church, including the Pope himself. The duo knew that once Han Shuo formally joined the Church, as the Master of the Skeleton Staff, Han Shuo would surely wield immense influence over the organisation. With this assurance from Han Shuo, the two of them could almost see the scene of their meteoric career success. Even though they were old, their minds couldn't calm down and they were very excited.
"Alright, you two can go first. As soon as I'm done here, I'll follow you to the headquarters of the Calamity Church," Han Shuo calmly instructed the two who were beaming from ear to ear.
"Understood, Lord Bryan. Just contact us when your lordship is ready," Wolf and Burt Zili bowed respectfully and left.
Wolf had revealed the method of communication of the Church of Calamity to Han Shuo a long time ago. He did not treat Han Shuo as an outsider at all.
That made sense. The Calamity Church's divine weapon, the skeleton staff, was in Han Shuo's possession. Moreover, Han Shuo was a necromancer. Not to mention that he was a sworn enemy of the Church of Light. His behaviour and actions over the past few years had indeed been in line with the goals of the Calamity Church. It was only natural that the Calamity Church had long since accepted him as one of their own.
After Wolf and Burt Zili left, Han Shuo continued to think for a while. He thought about the bitter experience of having his soul invaded in an underground chamber of the cemetery of death. He realised that the god had wanted his faith back then, and had made him serve under his Church of Calamity with all his heart. But now, at this point, Han Shuo had also become a god. Han Shuo believed that as long as this evil god was not a fool, he would not use such a method on him again.
Different situations require different actions. Well, I guess Calamity Church and I will take advantage of each other. But when my strength has reached a certain level, there is no telling who will be in control of the other, Han Shuo told himself in his mind.
Over the next few days, Han Shuo compensated his three ladies in Ossen City, releasing the desire they had suppressed for the past five years. His deeds in the Southern border City and his actions at the Kasi Empire's Shrine of Ice were deliberately spread through the Dark Mantle, causing another wave of sensation throughout the Lancelot Empire.
It seemed as if Han Shuo had become the new god worshipped by the people of Lancelot's Empire overnight. The number of followers that the Druidic Order had converted in their many years of operation in the Lancelot Empire paled in comparison to the number that Han Shuo had gained in the past few days. Through Han Shuo's meticulous guidance, countless citizens of the Lancelot Empire had truly worshipped Han Shuo as their god and given him their power of faith.
Some things might have been pleasant and enjoyable for Han Shuo, but some things were just particularly thorny. For example, the other day, after he had fornicated with Emily, she asked him about Jasper, Hemanna and Sylph.
Since Emily was a high-ranking member of the Dark Mantle, and since the Abyssal Ladies were too attention-grabbing when they appeared in valley of Sunshine , it would only be strange if she was unaware of this.
Questions like these caused Han Shuo the most headaches. He had no choice but to pluck up courage and explain to Emily, emphasising the peculiarities of demonic arts cultivation and how he was forced to do so by the circumstances.
But Emily obviously didn't believe Han Shuo's explanation at all. She said angrily, "The whole empire knows you're a lecher, so don't tell me you're forced to do this. You better explain this to Fanny and Phoebe as well. They have also found out."
Han Shuo smiled bitterly when he heard Emily's words. He knew that it was easier to appease Emily, but not so much when it came to Fanny and Phoebe.
"Don't forget, there's the former Duchess of the Duchy of Helon, Helen, and the daughter of the Sacred Knight Sulo, Sophie. What are you going to do about them?" Emily made more accusations as she panted with anger.
"What has Sophie got to do with me?" Han Shuo pleaded innocently.
"Hmph, she travelled thousands of miles from the Kasi Empire to come to your Brettel City, and her family has made many generous contributions to your city. They now specialise in raising battle steeds in the former Bonton Duchy for Brettel City. Who in the world can't see that she's interested in you?" Emily let out a soft sigh and slapped Han Shuo's chest before grudgingly saying, "How could you be so promiscuous?"
Han Shuo smiled bitterly. He didn't know what to say and had nothing to say, so he exercised his right to remain silent.
