Aelorin braced himself for any sudden movements ShiVak might make after he replied to her question. His senses were on high alert, and his muscles were tense as he prepared for an outburst or perhaps a physical attack. But what he received was far from what he anticipated.
Instead of an outburst, ShiVak shrugged nonchalantly and stretched her arms, her expression one of disinterest. "If that's your reason," she said, her voice carrying an air of resignation, "then you'll become a monster in the end. Just be ready for that, Aelorin."
Her words struck him like a stone dropping into his chest. Aelorin was silent for a moment, feeling the weight of her statement pressing on him. At least she had not chosen to retaliate, he thought to himself, his mind scrambling to find solace in the moment. Right, ShiVak is not the heroic or justice-driven type. She only cares about her own survival.
