Chapter 39

It took several seconds for his eyes to adjust to the darkness, but as soon as they did, Gideon swept his gaze around the room. He didn’t recognize it. Dust hung in the air, unseen but not unfelt, and the long panels that adorned the walls were cracked with age. Sconces would have provided illumination if they’d had candles in them, but those stood empty, blind sentries to a room full of nothing but one very hungry vampire.

Long curtains obscured one entire wall. Gideon took sure strides toward them, grabbing an edge to yank it aside. More dust clouds immediately billowed out, but he closed off his lungs and waved it aside in order to peer outside.

A younger vampire might not have been so bold about yanking open a curtain without checking to see if it was daylight first. Gideon was old enough to recognize the cloak of an old and welcome friend like night, no matter where the fuck he was.
