Chapter Fifty-Four

For the last time, I took a final look inside the house before nodding and stepping out. I knew Tyrone was exhausted and wouldn't wake up anytime soon. We walked several kilometers away from the house.

"What do you want to say?" My tone came out harsher than I intended. There was an edge to my voice, a sharpness born out of my own uncertainty.

"I'm pregnant," Kate said, her voice tremulous, as if I hadn't already noticed. But I needed to hear it, I needed her to say the words aloud.

"And?" I replied, my tone still unforgiving. I knew where this conversation was headed. I knew it, but I needed her to confirm it. I needed to face the reality of the situation head-on.

"I'm pregnant, and Tyrone is the father," she confessed to me. Her eyes were brimming with unshed tears, and I could see the conflict within her. She looked fragile, a stark contrast to the strong facade she used to wear. I should have been the one breaking down, not her.
