Chapter 14

Nobody said a thing. Rath pissed, too, while Frank and I waited astride our horses. I glanced his way, catching his gaze for a moment before Merle declared we proceed. From then on, Bonner didn’t look around so much. He’d decided on the place and I made mental note, figuring we’d come about fifteen miles. The next wire to Whitlock would relate this information.

Contention was actually named Contention City, which I found redundant as of course it was a city, so why add that? Most called it by the one name, but the sign of welcome had the whole thing.

“Where’d they get such a name?” I asked Rath as we walked our horses up the main drag.

“Story is two fellows argued over the place, claims and such, so it was born of contention.”

I chuckled. “Makes sense.”
