My mother poured the last of the Pinot Grigio into her glass and turned back to whatever she was cooking before asking me, “Were you sexually attracted to him?”

My stomach churned. Oh, God. Was it possible she knew about us? Had Paul told her the truth? Is that why she was drunk and blasting Captain and Tennille songs in her kitchen?

“What kind of question is that?” I asked with a laugh, trying my best to sound casual and not freaked out.

She shut off the burner and turned to me. “As a gay man, I just want to know if you were attracted to Paul.”

I chose my words carefully. “I thought he was attractive.”

“He’s bisexual.”
