Let's see if you can handle this

The air crackled with tension as I faced Valeria in the clearing, her imposing figure standing as calm and unyielding as a mountain.

The sun hung low in the sky, casting golden light across the training grounds and illuminating the sweat already beading on my forehead. I tightened my grip on the flaming bow I had conjured, the fire warm and steady in my hands.

"You're improving," Valeria said with a smirk, her hands resting casually on her hips. "But that doesn't mean I'm going to go easy on you."

"Good," I replied, my voice steady despite the hammering of my heart. "Because I'm not holding back either."

Her grin widened, feral and challenging. "I'd like to see you try."

Taking a deep breath, I pulled back the bowstring, feeling the familiar tension as a fiery arrow materialized. My focus sharpened, the world around me fading into a blur as I aimed for Valeria. I released the string, and the arrow shot through the air with a sharp whistle, its path straight and true.

But, of course, Valeria was faster. She sidestepped effortlessly, the arrow grazing past her with a hiss before embedding itself in the ground.

"Not bad," she said, brushing nonexistent dust off her shoulder. "But you'll have to do better than that."

I gritted my teeth and summoned another arrow, this time letting loose a rapid volley. One after another, they streaked toward her, their fiery light painting trails in the air.

Valeria moved like water, fluid and unrelenting. She dodged, ducked, and weaved, her movements almost too fast for my eyes to follow. Each missed shot only fueled my determination.

"Stop aiming where I am," she taunted. "Aim where I'm going to be."

I adjusted my stance, narrowing my focus. The next arrow flew, and Valeria barely managed to dodge it. Her eyes flickered with something that might have been surprise or amusement.

"That's more like it," she said, her tone laced with approval.

I didn't stop. The bow vanished in a burst of flame, replaced by a fiery whip that coiled around my arm like a living thing. I snapped it forward, the crack echoing through the clearing as it lashed toward Valeria.

She raised an arm, catching the whip with her bare hand. Her smirk deepened as she yanked, pulling me off balance.

"Nice try," she said, her strength overpowering mine in an instant.

I stumbled but quickly released the whip, letting it dissolve into embers as I rolled to the side. Without missing a beat, I conjured a blade of fire, the hilt fitting perfectly into my hand.

Our clashes grew fiercer, the intensity mounting with every exchange. Valeria moved like a predator, her strikes calculated and precise. I countered as best I could, using the techniques I'd honed over the past weeks.

But it wasn't enough.

She was relentless, her attacks a storm of power and speed that left me scrambling to keep up. My muscles ached, my breath came in ragged gasps, and every move felt like I was pushing against an immovable force.

Still, I refused to back down.

Summoning the bow again, I leaped back and launched another volley of arrows, this time aiming for the ground around her. Flames erupted with each impact, creating a ring of fire that cut off her escape routes.

Valeria paused, her eyes flicking to the burning circle. For a moment, I thought I had her.

But then she laughed.

"Clever," she admitted, stepping forward and extinguishing the flames with a single swipe of her hand. "But not clever enough."

I didn't have time to react. She closed the distance between us in the blink of an eye, her fist slamming into the ground where I'd been standing a heartbeat ago.

The force of the impact sent shockwaves through the earth, and I was thrown back, tumbling across the dirt.

I groaned, struggling to my feet as Valeria stalked toward me. "Is that all you've got?" she asked, her voice a mixture of amusement and challenge.

"No," I said, wiping the dirt from my face. "I've got plenty more."

With a shout, I thrust my hands forward, sending a wave of fire hurtling toward her. The heat was intense, the flames roaring as they surged across the clearing.

Valeria raised a hand, and the fire parted around her like water hitting a rock. She stepped through the inferno unscathed, her expression one of mild annoyance.

"You're still holding back," she said, her tone almost scolding.

"I'm not!" I snapped, frustration boiling over.

"Yes, you are." Her voice turned sharp, her gaze piercing. "You're afraid to push yourself, to lose control. That fear is your greatest weakness."

Her words stung because they were true. I'd been holding back, afraid of what might happen if I let go completely. But I couldn't afford to hold back anymore not if I wanted to win.

I closed my eyes, drawing on every ounce of strength I had left. The fire surged within me, wild and untamed, but this time I didn't try to suppress it.

When I opened my eyes, the flames in my hands had transformed into twin blades, their edges glowing with a fierce, crimson light.

Valeria's eyes narrowed. "Now we're talking."

I charged, the blades slicing through the air as I closed the gap between us. Valeria met my attack head-on, her movements as fluid and powerful as ever. Our clash sent sparks flying, the air around us thick with heat and energy.

For a moment, it felt like I was holding my own, each strike and counterstrike matching her intensity. But then she shifted, her movements becoming faster, more precise.

It was like fighting a hurricane.

She disarmed me with a single, well-placed strike, one of the blades flying from my hand and dissipating into embers. Before I could react, her fist connected with my stomach, knocking the wind out of me.

I fell to my knees, gasping for air as the remaining blade vanished.

Valeria stood over me, her expression unreadable. "Look good," she said. "But you're still not there yet."

She stepped back, raising her hand. For the first time, I saw the faint glow of her magic, a swirling purple energy that radiated power.

I stared, realization dawning. She was about to use her magic.

"Let's see if you can handle this," she said, her voice calm but laced with challenge.

The air around her shifted, crackling with energy as the purple glow intensified.
