Tingen Nighthawks

Chapter 7: Tingen Nighthawks

"Blackthorn Security Company."

William looked at the sign and understood that it was probably just a name for the general public. Mr. Moretti pushed the door without knocking, and William followed him. Inside, there was a classic sofa that might have been for serving guests, a soft fabric armchair, and a wood coffee table. A girl with brown hair was behind a table right across with her head drooping.

William noticed that the girl was reading some kind of magazine. Just as they entered, the girl raised her head and looked at them.

"Good afternoon, Klein. It's rare to see you here at this time of day." She spoke in a cheerful tone, and William couldn't help but think she seemed like the typical girl who got along with everyone.

"Hi, Rozanne. I'm sorry, I can't talk much today because I have something pending with the captain." Klein returned the greeting amicably.

"Oh, he should be in his office, in the room opposite Mrs. Orianna." William followed Mr. Moretti awkwardly. He didn't know Rozanne, and he wasn't on friendly terms with Klein either.

They went through the reception partition and knocked on the door of the first office on the right. A deep yet kind voice came from inside:

"Come in."

Klein pushed the door, and William could see a man dressed in a white shirt and black vest. Even though his hairline was rather high, his gray eyes were deep, and he appeared much fresher.

The person Mr. Moretti called Captain looked at him instantly before piercing his eyes at Klein.

"Who is he?"

Klein looked a bit embarrassed before introducing him. "This is William Hastur. He is a person who became a Beyonder today. I brought him here because I didn't know what to do."

The Captain hummed for a second before looking at William again. "Is it true that you are only a Beyonder from today? Do you have any organization behind you?"

Will found the questions strange. If he had an organization behind him, it's not like he would tell the truth, right? That was until he noticed a strange feeling and a voice echoed in his head.

"Darling, this guy has put you in a dream. It seems that he intends to use the impressionable nature of a person when he is dreaming to find out the truth. I'll try to keep you aware." Debris's voice warned him of something surprising.

"What a terrible power." He sighed, mentally grateful to his partner. "That's right, I drank the potion this morning. I got the formula from my late grandmother."

The Captain nodded and closed his eyes. Instantly, William felt the disconcerting feeling disappear.

"William Hastur, right? My name is Dunn Smith, captain of the Blackthorn Security Company. I need to ask you, do you know the name of your Sequence?" The man introduced himself in the same deep voice as before.

"Yes, sir, it's Sequence 9: Knight." Will revealed the name of it without too much concern. It couldn't matter too much, could it?

"Knight? I've never heard of that. Anyway, Since you're not in any organization, may I ask what God you believe in?" This question again left the guy a little puzzled.

He wondered what he should answer. He knew that faith was very important in this world, so, with no other options, he decided to go with Evernight Goddess, since it was where the faith of the previous William was.

He made the Evernight Church hand gesture. "I am a believer of the Goddess."

Dunn Smith's eyes lit up and he laughed lightly. "That's good. How would you like to join us?"

Both William and Klein looked at him dumbfounded. The first because he never expected this turn of events, and the second because he thought he would have to ask and probably get rejected.

"Can I?" William asked, not quite sure if he had spent all the luck of his life that day.

"Of course, you can. For us, It's much better to have a new partner than to have to keep an eye out for a new Beyonder who might end up losing control." As he was speaking, he took out a piece of paper from his desk. "Besides, as Nighthawks our faith is the same."

William read the contract that Dunn had taken out. The emphasis was on the confidential clause. Violators were tried in the tribunal courts of the Church of the Evernight Goddess instead of the kingdom's courts.

"So this is an organization associated with the Church of the Goddess?" Dunn nodded without further explanation.

"A five years contract. ¡6 pounds a week! What the hell?" William widened his eyes in disbelief at the salary. Klein laughed at his side and looked at him as if he knew what he was thinking.

"Normally, you would start as part of the civilian staff, with a lower salary, but because you are already a Beyonder you can now become an official member directly. As you become more experienced the money will also increase." The Captain explained as if he had done this infinite times. "The salary is this high since you'll be constantly exposing yourself to danger. There must be a prize for that."

"Although many times we only handle common cases." Klein humorously satirized

"Nighthawks Squad, Tingen City, Awwa County, Loen Kingdom." William felt a little excited. Maybe this was his chance to start fitting into this crazy world full of magical powers.

He signed the contract and handed it to Dunn Smith, who took it with a smile.

"So, welcome to the Tingen Nighthawks. I'll introduce myself again. I'm Dunn Smith, captain of the squad. You can leave for today. come again tomorrow so you can meet the other members."

Then it was Klein who spoke:

"My name is Klein Moretti, I also joined very recently, I hope to get along with you." For the sake of both of them, they would forget the fact that one pointed a revolver at the other while that other threatened him with a sword that moved on its own.

"Great, I'll come tomorrow then." William said goodbye and then left. It wasn't until he got home that he began to think about what would happen to his studies and his new job.

"Damn, what am I going to do now?" As soon as he thought he had gotten rid of a problem, a new headache appeared.
