“Well, obviously I didn’t have AIDS, but that didn’t stop me from worrying I would get it. It wasn’t until I met Jake and the rest of the guys on the ranch that I found out how people actually get AIDS. So no, I don’t blame you or Evelyn for ‘abandoning’ me or whatever. Frankly I’d been planning on running away for a while by then, but I didn’t want to do it if I was sick and needed help paying medical bills. Otherwise I was going to run away to Aunt Katherine’s house. ‘Cept I’m pretty sure she was going through her second divorce at the time so that option was out.”

Jamison grimaced. “Oh, yeah, no. I can’t see you having a better time at her place anyway.” He picked up his mug of coffee, stared at it a moment, then added, “So you’re not…you don’t resent any of us for not trying to help you?”
