Chapter Thirty-Six: Watch and wait.

"Shouldn't we have donuts and coffee?" Jake quizzed.

"You're watching too much television," Herman replied.

They were staking out the address that Herman got from his digging, hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the alleged perpetrators of the string of crimes giving them sleepless nights.

"How long have you been doing this?" Jake asked.

"In my line of work, I have discovered that the answers we think we need, we don't really want to hear them," Herman replied. His hands rested on the wheel as his eyes were focused on the front door of the house they were staking.

"Was I getting personal?" Jake asked.

"Yes, but not with me. With yourself," Herman replied, his gaze unwavering.

Jake was trying to find the message within Herman's mystical approach to communication. He had only been trying to make conversation, but now it seemed there was something standing in the way of that happening.
