Celestial Child

On a world where science and technology are but a vague concept heard in stories, powerful magic is not something only to be found in fiction, but a part of one's daily life. Follow the awakening of a child born among the stars on her journey to explore the universe, as she carves her own path among the myths and legends and creates miracles never seen before. While many crave for power, training themselves to gain strength and influence, a girl standing at the very pinnacle finds herself with totally different challenges than those around her. Some say that with great power comes great responsibility. This story however, is not about responsibility. Add great power on top of a kind, but naïve young child and you get a very different outcome. With great power comes great collateral damage! Now who is going to clean up the mess? ********** Celestial Child is a mix of a mostly western high fantasy setting with Xianxia elements. It includes an overly strong main character, a good deal of romance as well as a bit of comedy. If you like strong main characters and enjoy story writing that has a more relaxed approach, without the protagonist constantly being forced by outside events to heedlessly rush from A to B to C, then this might be for you. While situations and characters will often be a little exaggerated, because I do quite like the occasional face slapping moments, I try to keep it limited to a somewhat believable level, when it comes to character motivations. No 100% chance to meet over the top arrogant noblemen in every restaurant, who try to beat you up just because they get no seat, sorry! Currently paused indefinitely until I figure out what to do with the story and if I even want to continue, sorry. Special Thanks to SeerLight for the awesome Cover image. I only told her it would be fun ...

All kinds of weapons could be found in the hall. Some like normal swords and axes were very common weapon types even among warriors who had no magical potential, while other more exotic variants, were obviously for magical warriors alone, as the requirements of wielding them would go beyond someone's pure physical strength.

Many tried different weapons, but only a few of the students found a weapon that would not instantly reject them. Their weapons started to glow a little bit and the students quickly sat down to commune with the weapon seeds trying to get its approval.

For a long time Myra just wandered around, looking at all the weapons displayed in the large hall. Swords, axes, daggers, spears, she even found maces and hammers, but none of them caught her interest. She did not even bother to touch them. She also noticed that there seemed to be no bows or other ranged weapons, but did not comment further on it.

Then in a corner of the hall she finally found a long but slender double bladed polearm that looked interesting. Unlike other polearms it did not have a wooden haft, instead it was made completely out of various metals. Even though the weight was substantial, it still had an elegant design with slightly curved double edged blades on each end of the haft, each about 50 centimeters in length, while the haft connecting the two was about 80 centimeters long. The haft seemed to be made of steel, while the slightly pointed blades on each end, which were curving in opposite directions were made out of some silver gleaming alloy that Myra expected to be some mix of star steel. In a way the polearm looked not unlike two curved sword blades connected at the hilts with a haft and turned in opposite directions.

She barely raised her hand to remove the polearm from the display when she could see it trembling for a moment. Everyone expected the weapon to reject her, as many other students were rejected by various weapons before, but instead of withdrawing from her, the weapon did its best to jump into her hands, as if it were excited to find her.

A little bit stunned, Myra looked at the beautiful, but nonetheless heavy weapon in her hands.

It was a good bit longer than she was, but as she would still grow up some more, she was not bothered by it. Compared to other polearms it was probably one of the shorter ones, but due to the haft made out of metal, it also had a lot more weight.

She just wanted to find out how to interact with the weapon seed, when the weapon started to glow. It felt as if the weapon wanted to tell her something but couldn't do so on a physical level. Used to having a strong spirit form, Myra did what she always did in the past when communing with the world, she sat down closed her eyes sent out her spirit into the weapon.

Myra did not notice that the glow of the weapon became stronger, filling the whole room with an awe inspiring majestic light. She just let her spirit find its way to the weapon seed and then guided it along to her physical body.

"It awakened! The weapon spirit awakened!"

Their instructor Gorm was looking like a little child with an excited expression on his face.

Like a newborn, the weapon spirit was blindly following Myra's spirit around, consuming the little tidbits of power that she left for it on its path. Others would not be able to interact in such a way with their weapon spirit. They would have to wait for it to grow up on its own, slowly and arduously learning to understand each other through intuition and staying together for a long time.

Myra on the other hand could even communicate with the universe around her and did so for tens of thousands of years. A little weapon spirit was really just using her experience on a much smaller scale.

"I remember what to do now!" Myra was really excited as some of her memories of smithing and weapons that she had thought lost became more and more clear again.

How are weapon spirits created? They were born! Not in a physical sense, but they were the children of the world. People would usually just find them and treat them like other resources, but they were more alike to living beings than materials.

However they were not as bound and limited as a mortal creature. The phrase 'You are what you eat' actually had its true origin in the world of spirits. If you wanted a spirit to show a certain property once it grows up, you had to feed and teach it accordingly.

"I have come from the stars, it would make sense to have a weapon that has a similar heritage." the girl mumbled to herself. She called down a tiny string of magical energy from the deep and dark space of the void between the planets. Even this tiny bit of magical power taxed her physical body a lot and she was exhausted after just a moment. This type of energy could not be found anywhere on this world. It was old and primordial, different from the forces of the relatively young world.

Mixing the energy with a drop of her blood she then fed it to the still formless weapon spirit who was eager to find some sustenance after lying dormant inside of the weapon for several years.

With the pure energy the weapon spirits shapeless form quickly changed, it was now awake and wanted a form in this outside world. Myra hesitated for a moment, wondering what her weapon spirit should look like.

Weapon spirits were mostly gender neutral, but often took on the personality of their wielder as it would allow them to be more in tune and it would make it easier to communicate.

Most of the time the weapon spirits would take a long time to be able to communicate and understand their wielders. They would have a lot of time to understand what form would be a fitting form to take, based on the experiences and their wielders subconscious ideas they experienced together.

This was the first time that someone could communicate with their weapon spirit, before they could even take on a form and like a kid that wanted to please its mother, the little weapon spirit wanted to know what it should look like.

'A beast like a tiger? A dragon? A fiery phoenix?' Myra thought about what she wanted her spirit to look like, but quickly decided against any of these forms. They were way too common. Everyone wanted to have a dragon or tiger, Myra wanted her spirit to be more unique.

Then she thought a children's book she once read, about a princess and a fairy that could fly and their adventures together. She enjoyed the book and the mischievous little fairy that could sit on the princess' shoulder would always make her laugh.

'To see a world in a grain of sand.' she thought, remembering some poetry she heard before.

"Having a tiny fairy weapon spirit with energy born of the universe itself seems like a good comparison. You might as well be grain sized, if we compare you to the universe."

"Do you want to be a little fairy?" Myra asked her weapon spirit and sent the image of a pixie sized winged girl to the spirit. The spirit was excited and quickly started to change its shape to that of a little glowing winged girl, who could stand on Myra's palm.

Long flowing silver hair, translucent wings that had a hint of starlight, looking like petals of a flower and a childlike, mischievous face with eyes that were as dark und unfathomable as the endless night sky among the stars. She was wearing a simple sleeveless long dress and no shoes. The spirit had the form and outline of a winged little human being, but her etherealness and mystical aura made it instantly obvious, that she could never be compared to a human. In the end she was still a nature spirit.

"You're way too cute to be a weapon spirit for such a big weapon!" Myra laughed and gave her weapon spirit some pats on her head with her finger.

"As you are a girl, you need a female name. You were born with stellar energy, therefore your name will be Stella!"

Some people would give their weapon spirits long or awe inspiring names, but Myra had no need for any of it. She did not want attention, neither did she want to be an awe inspiring hero with a weapon of legends. She would rather have another friend.

For the first time since she started the whole process Myra looked at the people surrounding her again.

"I'm done with binding my weapon spirit, instructor Gorm. What shall we do now?" Myra asked, while little Stella was looking at all the students and other weapons curiously.

She was led from her home in the polearm to the outer world rather quickly, advancing her understanding of the outer world by leaps and bounds, but as a newborn spirit she was still not used to all the new experiences and things she could sense. Stella was unable to understand the words and was still not sure about what all the expressions of the people around them would mean, but she could easily feel Myra's mood and knew that those people were no enemies.

"Ahh well, usually students don't complete the binding step on their own." Gorm explained. "We have a special ceremony to bind them, as there is no way to interact with them otherwise."

At least that was what he believed until now. He already knew about Myra's special identity as a royal princess, at least he thought he would know her real identity, but never would he have expected her to not only awaken a weapon spirit, but already bind with it and interact with it, to the point it would already be able to take on a form.

'How did she do it? Even my own weapon spirit doesn't have a form yet, this should be reserved to Hierophants who can let their soul and spirit interact with the weapon!'

"Do you mind telling us how you did the binding with your weapon spirit and why it took this form?"

Gorm hoped they could copy the process that she used and then improve their understanding about weapon spirits drastically. There must be some trick to how the girl in front of him did it.

"I woke her up and gave her some power and told her that it would be fun to come out." Myra tried to explain. "As for binding her, well a bit of blood and a source of energy I guess, nothing special?"

Gorm just stared at her. 'Nothing special!? I obviously know it takes a source of energy and some blood for a binding ritual, but how did she manage to transfer the energy to the spirit without the help of the various formations to refine it and interact with the spirit?'

"You told her it would be fun." Gorm still didn't really believe her and looked at Myra with a frown.

'The spirit already had a personality to identify with a gender? How did that happen, would that not take decades? Not to mention that a spirit would have no idea about fun, or anything like it. Everyone knows that spirits always learn about battle and fighting first because this is how they first wake up and form their personality.'

Myra rolled her eyes. "Well she is obviously female. Her name is Stella. Say hi to instructor Gorm."

Stella had no idea about language, but she understood Myra's intention, so she tilted her head to the side, smiled at the instructor and gave an excited shout that sounded more like a random mix of vocals rather than any sort of language.

"It understood her!" one of the students could not hold himself back and exclaimed. "She just got her weapon and the spirit already understood her!"

"I am sure there will be some other time to get to the bottom of how you managed to achieve this. As for now, maybe go and get your new weapon spirit settled and get a feeling for your weapon."

Instructor Gorm quickly led all the students out of the hall. "You will get many more chances to come here again to see if your progress made a difference, as of now, just study by yourself. I will have to go report to the principal."

If you wonder what that polearm might look like, think of a mirkwood double bladed polearm from The Hobbit, that should give you a good idea of the basic shape and looks.

Myra's version however has blades that are sharpened on all sides, not just single edged.
