Ruby was not so sure that she had heard properly. Was Severin mentioning a marriage? But it was not to her? The dishcloth and the plates which she was carrying back to the kitchen slipped from her grasp and crashed on the floor.
“Wait, Ruby! Careful now!” Severin exclaimed and reached out to help pick up the broken pieces of glass.
“Don’t touch anything, I will fetch the scoop,” Ruby said. She gently pushed Severin aside and took a deep breath.
Severin was not so sure about what was happening. Why was Ruby suddenly so calm? He hoped she was alright.
Ruby walked to the kitchen with firm steps, although she was trembling inside. She came back and Severin looked at her as if she was a character on a movie screen. Ruby bent down to sweep up the broken glass. Halfway through, she stopped and rose slowly with the scoop in her hand.
“Severin, did you just say that you have a marriage obligation, but you don’t want to comply?”
