Chapter 74
“Here we are, once again,” Chris said, as he settled down on a gurney wearing a hospital gown complete with paper shoes and cap. An orderly had already shaved him in preparation for the surgery, and he was lying on the gurney waiting for what came next.
“Yeah,” Mickey said. “Been there, done that. Ted’s outside, waiting to come in and give you a hug and wish you good luck.”
“Do you think he’s upset by my having to have surgery?”
“I don’t know, babe. You explained what they’re going to do in disgusting detail, and he seemed to understand.”
“That’s true, but I keep thinking that his last experience of having a relative in a hospital was when Ma died, and I didn’t know if he’d associate my hospital visit with hers.”
“That’s hard to say, babe. He’s bright, but the fact remains that he’s only ten. Anyhow, you did everything you could to prepare him for it, so all we can do is wait and see.”
