Jake swallowed. “I’m sorry.”
“You’re sorry.” She made it sound like an insult. “Of course you’re sorry. You’re always fucking sorry. You rip my life to shreds and—” She stopped speaking again and then abruptly swung around so her back was to Jake and Isaac. She bent her head and pinched the bridge of her nose, and Gabe realized she was crying and didn’t want them to see it. “You know what? Forget it. Just forget it. Nothing I say makes a damn bit of difference.” Her words creaked with the tears she was trying to force back. “Just…do whatever you want, like you always do. I’m not going to stand here wasting my breath.”
Jake looked stricken. He stepped toward her and lifted his hand like he wanted to touch her shoulder but didn’t dare finish the move. “Alice…?”
“Don’t.” Alice turned around. “Just, don’t. Go. Go to your apartment or wherever the hell you want, I don’t care. I can’t do this right now.”
Jake dropped his hand. He swallowed. “Yeah, sure,” he said quietly.
