“Yes, but why?”
Vix, bundled in her bedroll, looked over at Caine. “What?”
Caine lay on his back beside her. Darkness pooled in the spaces between them, filling them in like inky rivers. Stars winked down from the black tapestry of sky above, glimmering like gemstones.
A little farther away, Mirra slept soundly, her shoulders rising and falling in steady rhythm. Still, Vix kept a close eye on her.
“Why go to all this trouble?” Caine clarified. “If Cassidy was able to pull off a scheme like this, she must not have been being watched very carefully by these... Illumine people. With you already in her power, she could have gone about killing you in any number of ways, without all these complicated plots.”
Vix gave him a pointed look.
“And I’m very glad she didn’t, by the way,” Caine added quickly.
Vix chuckled. “I have no idea why. I’m just guessing with all this. It just... seems to make the most sense.”
