Chapter 10: The Awakening of the Dead

When Máximus awoke, the familiar atmosphere of the cave enveloped him immediately, but something had changed. He found himself once again in the center, though not by the shore as he remembered. Confused, he quickly stood up.

"What happened?" he whispered, frantically searching around. His first instinct was to look for the locket, and after not finding it immediately, a strange sensation crept through his body. He glanced down and saw it hanging around his neck. Something inside him stirred, a feeling of vitality he hadn't experienced since his transformation into an Inferius.

With slow steps, he approached the water to look at his reflection, though he usually avoided it because it only reminded him of his corpse-like appearance. But this time, something was different. He was still a corpse, yes, but his appearance seemed more recent, more human. It was as if the fragment of Voldemort's soul he had absorbed had rejuvenated his dead body, giving him a strange semblance of life.

"What has happened?" he asked aloud. "Attacking Voldemort... consuming his soul... but where was I? Was it my mind?"

Máximus stepped away from the water, and when he turned around, he was met with an unexpected sight. Six Inferi stood there, motionless, watching him with eyes that no longer had the typical empty coldness of corpses. There was something different about them, a spark, an essence that was almost alive in their gaze.

"What is this? Who are they?" he thought, as his dead heart tried to process what he was seeing.

As he got closer, he could make out among them a woman, four men, and a child. Though their bodies still showed signs of death, Máximus felt something different, almost as if they were connected to him. He immediately realized the truth. These Inferi were the same ones who had fought alongside him against Voldemort in that strange confrontation, and they too had absorbed fragments of his soul. Máximus no longer saw them as mere corpses. Something had changed within him—and in them.

"They are trapped... just as I was," he murmured, beginning to feel a deep connection to those lost souls.

With newfound clarity, Máximus realized he had discovered a way to reclaim his humanity. And not just his. Perhaps he could help the other Inferi as well. He no longer viewed them with repulsion or fear, but as beings who shared his fate—poor souls imprisoned by dark magic.

"Come closer," he commanded in a deep, guttural voice.

The Inferi moved slowly toward him, obeying his order, as if something inside them recognized Máximus as their leader. They stopped just a few inches from him, looking at him with empty eyes, yet filled with a faint hope, as if he were the key to their liberation.

Máximus approached the woman, her dead but vibrant eyes drawing him in.

"What is your name?" he asked.

The woman tried to respond, but her voice was barely a distorted echo of what it once was. The sound was raspy and strained, as if speaking was a monumental task for her worn-out body. After several attempts, the word "Ra... Rachel..." escaped her lips. It was all she could remember—her name, and nothing more. Like the other Inferi, Rachel had lost almost all her identity, trapped in that watery prison. Yet now, there seemed to be something more—a spark of humanity that had begun to revive.

As Máximus looked at Rachel and the others, he realized that it wasn't just them who had changed. He himself had transformed his way of seeing the world. He now understood that these Inferi weren't simple creatures controlled by dark magic. They were lost souls, trapped in an endless limbo, sacrificed to serve a dark purpose. But now, with what he had done, they had another chance.

"I have found a way to reclaim what was taken from us. Together, we can become what we once were..." he said with determination, though he knew the path wouldn't be easy.

The Inferi watched him in silence, absorbing his words. They knew, though they couldn't fully express it, that Máximus was their only hope. He had crossed a barrier that none of them had, and for the first time in a long time, the air around them seemed filled with a strange sense of purpose.

Máximus, with the locket hanging around his neck and a new mission in mind, understood that this was only the beginning of something much greater. If he could restore some humanity in them, perhaps he could restore it in himself. However, the battle was not over. Voldemort's presence still loomed over them, and now that Máximus had consumed part of his soul, he knew this hadn't gone unnoticed.
