The Warmth of Family

Kaelan fell into a deep sleep, feeling warm and safe in his bed. The gentle breeze made the curtains move softly, creating a peaceful atmosphere that helped him relax. But his calm sleep didn't last long.

A soft knock echoed through the room, breaking the stillness. "Young Master Kaelan?" Elara's voice called softly, hesitant yet cheerful. "It's time for dinner."

He stirred, blinking against the dim light that filtered through the curtains. Slowly, he registered the familiar, warm tone of his new maid, and he felt a sense of comfort wash over him. "I'm coming," he murmured, struggling to shake off the remnants of sleep.

With a groggy effort, Kaelan sat up, raking a hand through his long hair tied back in a ponytail. He quickly adjusted his hair, ensuring it looked neat before he stepped out. He had completely lost track of time. As he rubbed his eyes, a pang of hunger hit him, reminding him that he hadn't eaten since breakfast.

"I didn't realize how tired I was," he muttered, standing up and stretching.

As Kaelan stepped out, he found Elara there, her hazel eyes sparkling with warmth. "I was starting to worry you'd sleep through dinner too! Everyone is waiting for you in the dining room."

Kaelan gave a small smile, feeling a bit embarrassed for oversleeping. "I guess I needed the rest," he said softly, his stomach rumbling as if to confirm it.

Elara smiled, her braid swinging slightly. "You've had a long day. It's understandable! But dinner is ready, and I'm sure the cook has prepared something delicious as always." She gestured toward the hallway with a warm grin. "Shall we?" Elara asked.

Kaelan nodded, feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety as they made their way through the elegantly decorated halls of the mansion. As they walked, Elara chatted animatedly about the head maid's lessons. "She was teaching us today, but honestly, it was so boring," Elara said, her tone lighthearted. "I could barely keep my eyes open!"

Upon arriving at the dining room, Kaelan was greeted by the sight of the long table, beautifully set with sparkling glassware and ornate silverware. The aroma of roasted chicken and herbs filled the air, making his stomach growl louder.

"Ah, Kaelan!" the Duchess called from her seat beside the Duke, her voice warm and inviting. "Come on, you must be hungry after missing lunch."

The Duke, seated at the head of the table, gave a nod in acknowledgment, his expression softening as Kaelan entered the room. Cedric, sitting across from Lily, who was next to their mother, gave him a soft nod of acknowledgment, while Lily greeted him with a cheerful wave and a bright smile.

Kaelan felt a wave of relief wash over him as he approached the table. "Sorry for being late," he said, a slight blush creeping to his cheeks.

The Duke smiled faintly. "No need to apologize, Kaelan. You're just in time. Take your seat."

Kaelan sat down between the Duke and Cedric, the warm atmosphere of the dining room wrapping around him like a cozy blanket. The chandelier above cast a soft light, highlighting the many dishes in front of him. His stomach growled again, louder this time, and he realized just how hungry he was, feeling embarrassed as everyone heard and laughed.

The Duke looked at him with a gentle smile. "Let's eat," he said, his deep voice drawing attention and signaling the start of the meal.

Before Kaelan, a beautifully roasted chicken glistened under the candlelight, its skin crisp and golden. The aroma of garlic and roasted root vegetables mixed with the scent of herbs, while carrots and potatoes were caramelized to perfection. A bowl of fresh green salad sat in the middle of the table, its leaves crisp and tossed with cherry tomatoes, thin slices of cucumber, and a tangy vinaigrette. Warm bread rolls, soft and fluffy with a crusty exterior, were neatly arranged in a basket.

Kaelan reached for the bread, tearing off a piece and spreading some butter on it. It melted immediately on the warm surface, and the first bite made him sigh contentedly. The Duke then placed a slice of roasted chicken on Kaelan's plate.

"Thank you, Father," Kaelan said with a smile as he ate. The Duke smiled, pleased to see his son enjoying the meal. He glanced at his wife, who smiled back, sharing in the moment of warmth.

As they ate, conversation flowed easily around him. The Duchess spoke of the day's events, her voice soft and pleasant, while Lily chimed in with her garden adventures. Cedric, ever composed, remained quiet but offered occasional nods of agreement. Kaelan tried to follow the conversations, but his focus was on the meal in front of him, his hunger demanding attention.

Then the Duke said, "The Emperor is planning to hold a banquet next month." Kaelan paused mid-bite and stared at him.

"It's for the youngest princess's birthday," the Duchess added.

"Yes," the Duke continued, "It's a grand affair. Nobles from across the kingdom will attend, and representatives from other kingdoms will come as well. It's an excellent opportunity for us to strengthen our alliances."

The Duchess nodded, her expression thoughtful. "I hope the princess enjoys it. She's such a sweet girl."

The Duke nodded in agreement. Then the Duchess turned her gaze to Kaelan. "Kaelan, will you be going with us too?"

Everyone at the table paused, their eyes turning to Kaelan, waiting for his answer.

Ethan remembered from the book that the original Kaelan had never liked going out, especially to events filled with nobles and formalities. However, he had attended that particular banquet because the royal family had planned a spectacular fireworks display. The promise of vibrant colors lighting up the night sky had been too enticing to resist, even for someone who preferred the comfort of home.

"I will go," Kaelan said. He knew he had to protect his family.

The Duke nodded at Kaelan's decision. "That's good." The Duchess smiled warmly. "You might even make some new friends."

"If anyone says anything bad about you, just tell me," Cedric chimed in, his tone protective. "I'll set them straight."

"I'll introduce you to my friends," Lily added enthusiastically, her eyes sparkling. "They're all really nice, and I'm sure you'll get along with them!"

Kaelan felt more at ease with their support. "Thanks, everyone. I appreciate it," he said with a soft smile. His family nodded, their expressions filled with understanding and love, lightening the weight of his responsibilities.

After the main course was cleared away, dessert was served. A beautiful fruit tart filled with creamy custard and topped with an array of fresh berries was placed in front of Kaelan, Lily, and the Duchess. The sweet and tangy aroma filled the air, and Kaelan couldn't help but smile at the sight.

As he took his first bite, the crisp crust gave way to the smooth custard, and the burst of berries sent waves of delight through him. "Delicious, isn't it?" the Duchess remarked, savoring her slice.

"Absolutely," Kaelan replied, a smile spreading across his face.

The Duchess then playfully looked at her husband and Cedric, who were each enjoying their own savory dishes. The Duke had a cheese platter with aged cheddar and creamy brie, along with crunchy crackers. Cedric, on the other hand, had a bowl of spiced roasted nuts, and their savory smell mixed with the sweetness of the dessert.

"You two really missed out," the Duchess teased with a playful smile. "What's not to love about a good dessert?"

The Duke smirked and replied, "Some of us don't like sweet things, my dear."

Cedric nodded in agreement, adding, "Exactly."

Kaelan noticed that the two were happily munching on their choices.

"I guess that just means more tart for us! Right, Mother?" Lily said excitedly.

The Duchess laughed, her eyes sparkling. "Yes, Lily! Someone has to enjoy this lovely dessert." She took another bite, relishing the flavors as Kaelan continued to savor his tart, feeling grateful for the joyful atmosphere around the table.
