"Are you certain of this, Mia?" Scarlett looked down at the squeaking rat trapped inside a transparent box. She turned her gaze to Mia. "Are we absolutely certain we want to do this?"
"Scarlett, it was your idea. Besides, it is just a rat."
"It's a living animal," Scarlett explained.
"It was a living animal," Avery said. Everyone turned to look at her, shocked to see the rat dead in her hand. "What?"
"You killed it." Scarlett swallowed.
"We were planning on doing that before. Weren't we?" She placed the dead rat on the table. Avery adjusted her glove as she stared down at the rat. "If this works, Scarlett, everything will change. There will be no more sickness or death."
"However, what if it doesn't?" Cornelia asked.
"It will, Cornelia. We must believe." Avery reached for the red water and poured a small amount into a cup. "How do we go about doing this? Should I use it to bathe it or feed it?"
Scarlett flipped the book open. "It says here that we should drink."
