New Year

Madoka's POV

I plopped on my bed and sighed. The trip was finally over, there were some good parts and some bad parts to it. Overall, it was an okay trip for me but now, I needed to get ready for the New Years eve festival later tonight.

"Madoka, get ready for the festival." said my mom

I groaned, forgetting that the festival starts in an hour. Good thing I'm not tired, if I was I wouldn't go.

"Is Kenji Kun coming?" asked my mom

"Yea he is." I replied

My mom looked excited and I rolled my eyes but I just smiled a bit. I got up and showered really quick before getting ready. I pulled out my kimono out of my closet and sighed as I put it down on my bed.

'I don't really like this, I wish I could wear a guy's kimono.'

I began to undress and began to put on my kimono but it was so frustrating. There were so many things I had to be careful so I had to ask my mom for help. My mom began to help me out and with my red and white kimono.

"Kikotei and his family is waiting outside." said my mom

"Oh." I simply replied

"Is Kenji bringing his parents?" asked my mom

"I don't know." I replied

"Have you never asked him about his parents?" asked my mom

"No, I don't think he likes to talk about it." I replied

"Oh, I see." replied my mom

She finished dressing me up and did my hair. I stood up and checked myself out in the mirror.

"All ready?" asked my mom

"Yes I'm ready." I replied

I put on my slippers which I hate the most and left the apartment where Kikotei and his parents were waiting. I greeted their parents and I talked to Kikotei while we waited for Kenji.

"What's taking Kenji kun so long?" asked Kikotei

But before I could respond I saw Kenji at the end of the block. He was wearing his kimono which was all black but had slightly brown trousers with a black jacket that came along with the kimono. (I don't know the parts of Japanese kimonos so I apologize if my facts are incorrect.)

"Oh it's Kenji kun!" excitedly said Kikotei

Kenji bowed at my parents and Kikotei's parents and everyone was going crazy.

"Ohh Madoka you have fine man." said Kikotei's mom

"It's not like that." I replied

Kikotei's parents and my parents were all talking to Kenji and it was clear this was out of his comfort zone. After talking for a bit we began walking towards the festival.

"So you actually do wear a girl's kimono." commented Kenji

"Are you mocking me?" I hissed

"No, it looks nice on you." said Kenji as he cracked a small smile.

I became all flustered so I just looked away from him and rubbed my cheeks.

"Uhh thanks, you look good as well." I quickly replied

"Oh, thanks." he simply replied

We got to the festival area which was filled with bright lights, food stands, game stands and a bunch of other things.

"Oh this is nice." excitedly said Kikotei

He began playing a fishing game while Kenji watched him.

"You look like a child who wants to play this game." I commented

"I've never seen this game that's why." he replied

"Have you never seen this game?" I questioned

"Yea I haven't." he replied

"Oh wow." I whispered

"Is there something wrong?" questioned Kenji

"A big one, you should play." I said

Kenji looked really confused but Kikotei gave him a fishing rod and Kenji actually started playing, making me laugh.

"Am I doing this wrong?" asked Kenji

"No it's just that you're actually playing it." I laughed

I took a video and Kenji was actually trying to win but he eventually just lost.

"Uhh yeah let's not talk about that." said Kenji

"Oh look it's those two!" I heard people shouting

I turned and saw a group of teens pointing at us and now everyone's attention was on us.

'Not this again.'

"Excuse can we get a picture?" asked a teenage boy

Kenji seemed a bit awkward and out of it but we just nodded so we all took pictures with a bunch of teenagers, families and other people but neither me nor Kenji smiled.

The night went on with me, Kikotei and Kenji going around to stands doing other activities, trying some new food. Both Kenji's phone and my phone were blowing up on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms I had on my phone.

"My hair is getting a bit messed up." commented Kenji

"Your split hair looks fine." I replied

"Is it?" questioned Kenji

"Yea your hairstyle is fine Kenji kun." replied Kikotei

"Oh okay." replied Kenji

I looked at the time and it was 10 minutes before 12 o'clock am.

"Let's head over to the beach, they're going to showcase some fireworks." I said

"Fireworks!" excitedly said Kikotei

We began heading towards the beach and took short stops at some stands to get some food. But then we got to this one stand and there was a man who looked at the three of us and smiled.

"Is that your kid?" asked the man

Kikotei laughed and Kenji and I just gave him the uhhh look.

"No, he's our friend." replied Kenji

"Oh are you two couples or something? You two seem to be really close right now." he commented

I looked over and I was actually really close to Kenji, our hands were actually grazing against each other.

"No uhh we're not." I replied trying to act normal

"Oh sorry." laughed the man

We got to the beach and there were already a bunch of people gathering there. We had more and more people recognize us and it was getting really crowded around us and people automatically assumed that we were dating. We continued taking pictures with everyone and even signed some things. I felt like a celebrity and I already don't like it.

"I'm so over taking pictures." I sighed

"It's crowded." implied Kenji

Kenji looked at his watch and looked at the water.

"It's 5 minutes before the new year." said Kenji

"I can't wait to see it. It's been so long since I saw a firework display." said Kikotei

Once we got down to 30 seconds everyone on the beach started counting down and Kikotei joined once it got to 10.

"10! 9! 8! 7! 6! 5! 4! 3! 2! 1!"

Once the time turned to 12:00 the first firework shot up into the night sky and exploded into bright lights. Everyone cheered and clapped and Kenji and I just watched the fireworks.

"Nice." commented Kenji

"It is nice." I replied

"I hope this year will be better than last year." commented Kenji

"It will be." I said

I hugged his arm and Kenji seemed surprised but he smiled and went with it. We continued to watch the fireworks and enjoyed every second of it.

2 days later

Madoka's POV

I was back in school and I can't tell if anything changed. But I do know for sure that everyone is staring at me ever since I got back. Apparently someone took a picture of me and Kenji watching the fireworks from behind. It got our backs and the fireworks in the frame, the picture came out really nice but of course everyone especially one of them is freaking out about this.

"I can't believe you went there with him." said Homura

I just shrugged and shot the ball.

"He lives in my neighborhood." I replied

"Yea I'm fine with that but why are you two so close to each other?" asked Homura

He was obviously lying that he was fine with it but I just sighed and shook my head.

"There were a lot of people, we had to get close." I lied

"There's literally no one around you." said Homura

"Homura, drop it. We're just friends for fucks sake." I snapped

Homura looked pissed so he stormed out of the gym and everyone watched him storm out of the gym. I rolled my eyes in annoyance and continued shooting around doing some drills wearing my new shoes.

"Hey Kenji kun isn't here." commented Emiko

"He called in sick today." replied Coach Yamoto

"Sick?" I questioned

"Yea, apparently during class he went to class and was sent back to his dorm." said Coach Yamoto, "He did go to work cause he needed the money but he can't continue straining his body."

"That's… weird." I whispered to myself

I didn't get to visit him at the cafe but I did come to school with him. He was perfectly fine, he didn't look sick nor act sick.

'Maybe a flu is starting to kick in now.'

I wanted to visit him after practice but I knew that Homura wouldn't allow it so I decided to visit him the day after or maybe I'll just text him after practice.

"Okay girls our next game is the day after tomorrow." said Coach, "So give it your best during practice."

We all nodded and we started practice by running one mile. We began running but I wanted to take my time jogging instead of wasting my energy. We began running around the track where the track team were doing their warmups but then that girl started running next to me, the girl who hit up on Kenji during the festival.

"Hina?" I questioned

"Oh so you know who I am." said Hina while smiling

I just nodded, I didn't really want to talk to her but she playfully elbowed me.

"Hey by any chance, is anyone dating Kenji?" asked Hina

"Kenji?" I questioned

"Yea, I'm trying to hang out with him since he seems like a good guy and he's so fucking hot." said Hina

I started feeling something in my chest and it made me want to just hurt her.

"No, he's single." I replied

"Great." excitedly said Hina, "Oh is there anyone who's trying to take him?"

"There's quite a lot." I replied

"Well, there's no way anyone can compete with me." said Hina while smiling

'Cocky whore.'

"Anyways, thanks." she said while elbowing me gently

She ran off and I rolled my eyes in annoyance.

"Madoka chan, what was that?" asked Emiko

"She's trying to go out with Kenji." I replied

"Oh no..." whispered Emiko in sadness

"She asked me if he was single." I explained, "And she was confident that she'll go out with him."

"I can't go against Hina chan, she's too perfect." said Emiko

"Don't worry, Kenji's a very unique guy." I replied, "He might not go out with Hina."

"Really? Do you think I have a chance?" asked Emiko

"Kind of." I lied

Emiko shrieked in excitement and smiled.

"You're the best Madoka chan!" excitedly cheered Emiko

'I didn't even do anything.'

3 hours later

Madoka's POV

I texted Kenji before practice ended and it's been about 5 minutes and he hasn't responded. He never responded to my texts late, even if he was busy he would text back asking me to wait.

'Maybe he's showering.'

I waited another 10 minutes but he still hasn't responded which gave me a weird feeling so I decided to head over to his dorm room to check up on him.

I got there and knocked on it and waited but he didn't respond so I knocked again but then this time I heard footsteps approaching and Kenji slightly opened the door which confused me.

"Hey what brings you here?" asked Kenji

"I heard that you were sick, I wanted to check up on you." I replied, "And you weren't responding to my texts."

"Oh sorry I just woke up from a nap." he replied, "And I have the flu and it's pretty contagious that's why I'm not opening the door all the way."

"Oh okay, do you need anything?" I asked

"No I'm fine. I think I'll be fine tomorrow morning so don't worry." replied Kenji

"Oh okay, then get better. I'll see you tomorrow." I said

He nodded and I headed back to my dorm.

Kenji's POV

I closed the door and once I did that my body started trembling.

"You have a friend now." said a voice behind me.

I looked at the handle and I started sweating a lot, my heart thumping really hard.

"A-Aiko chan I-"

I slowly turned around and saw the fear of my life stand before me.

"I finally found you, you little shit." she growled
