Be careful, kid, I warned myself. This is really just contract work. In six months you could be looking for another job.
I was restless lying on the tanning bed, but I knew I had to do it. I knew this tanning was necessary. It wouldn’t be good to lie in the Caribbean sun with white, white skin. Besides, the warmth felt good. I’d have to get used to that, too.
I heard the warning buzzer sound. Had it been ten minutes already? Hal lifted the cover enough for me to roll over.
It’s amazing where your mind goes when you’re not doing anything with it. Car hadn’t said where she was going, or what her errands were. Had she grown tired of me already? Stop it! I chided myself. You’re her assistant, her gigolo. Not her wife. She doesn’t have to answer to you. Leave that alone. Stop being so paranoid.
