Chapter 17: blood moon (part four)
With just two minutes to sunrise, Kai wanders the streets of Moonwater on his lonesome. Confusion, worry, and fatigue spiral about the deepest depths of his stomach until he's nauseous. His feet carry him to Austin and Evangeline's place, a cozy little complex of conjoined apartments waiting to be made a home.
Eve is the one to greet him at the door, eyes a calmer, dimmer shade of red under the approaching new moon. One look at Kai makes her expression sober before she calls out, "Austin! Kai’s here!"
A moment later, Austin's stood in the doorway, apprehension embedded deep within his eyes as he gestures for Kai to follow him inside. "Hey, bud", he greets stiffly, eyes skittish like he can't quite meet his stare.
The sight, coupled with Wilma having run off, makes the cloud of apathy lingering over his head, brings tears to Kai's eyes. He tries to blink them away, but try as he might, they just keep coming. Tremors pass throughout his body as stifled sobs lay waste to him.
