Prologue

Life is complicated, isn't it?

Everyday we make simple decisions not knowing if it will come to bite us in the end. That's part of my problem, I use to live a life not thinking about my simpler choices. Like "What am I going to eat?" "What will I wear?" or, my personal favorite, "When will I leave?"

All of that was taken away from me the moment my foot stepped through those metal gates. "You can't leave yet Maryanne, You must learn the basic of magic before anything else. Here you will stay and be taught how to control your ability." Those words were said in a friendly and calm tone but it doesn't take away there meaning in my mind.

I miss my home and family in these dark halls. "Look, it her!" "Ugh... disgusting. Does she have no shame?" Everywhere I walked I was judged and tormented by mocking stares. "You are pathetic. Can't even do a simple spell such as this." That was all that was left for him to spit in my face.

But nothing compared to my heart and how it is being tossed back and forth between people I care about. "I love you but you went and slept with him. You can't lie about it to me." A heartbroken boy softly whispers to me as he drops the box in his hands, leaving the contents to be spilled onto the floor.

All of it wasn't my choice. Those rumors, those people, I didn't want to stay here in the first place. But the only thing that is keeping me going is those star-filled eyes. "Maddie! Come play with us!" Those two, happy children are waiting for me back home and I can't let them down.

"The choice was yours to make, and a smart one it was. Here is the device that will suppress you magic for now," The head master handed me the collar I am to wear the rest of my time here at the Academy. "Welcome to Alason Achedemia, please study hard and enjoy your stay here."
