Under such conditions, his brain was not short of adrenaline at all, coupled with the fact that he was also an awakened, even though a weak one.
After regaining his sight and balance, Ezra quickly looked up to find his way, but the sight that greeted his eyes was terrible, Oscar had been impaled through the midsection from the back with the nail of the monster, and was about to die with a mouth full of blood. Ezra felt his heart almost stop beating, and he could feel how it tightened in his chest before letting out blood. His eyes were not fixed on the scene before his eyes, like he was disconnected from that space entirely.
The monster was really wild, and it showed its madness and struck Oscar's body on the ground like it was pounding something, twice.
Ezra remained frozen, as thoughts paced his mind. Though this was not the time for such things, he could not control it at this moment. This was his very close friend, practically the brother that was not of his blood.
The Adrenaline in him gradually burnt up and dried.
The massacre did not stop there, and soon the team was wiped out. Maybe If Ezra could follow high speed movement of other high ranked awakened, he would notice the moment Jossie had ran passed him when he was pushed away. She had managed to escape through the small opening at the right corner. It was times like this that one appreciated their small stature.
Kneeling on the ground, there was nothing else that could move him. Ezra already had the thought of those he had left at home and the children in the orphanage. He couldn't even muster a tear at the moment.
'If I die now, then it would have all been for nothing.' Ezra thought to himself, looking at the bloodied floor between him and the monster.
'Why me of all people?' He thought in his mind.
. .
. .
It seemed like if he didn't move, the monster wouldn't attack, it stood firm on the ground looking blankly at nothing before it, with Ezra like an ant before its mighty figure.
After about five minutes of maintaining his still position, his mind was coming back piece by piece.
Ezra's eyes swept across the place, and he could see the gruesome scene of body parts and organs lying around. His eyes subconsciously stopped before he looked at where Oscar's body lay, then something hit him. There was an anomaly.
The bodies on the ground counted up to ten, but there were thirteen people. Obviously, he couldn't see as Jossie escaped, so there was that. Naturally, he quickly came to the assumption that they had been eaten. Fate quickly proved him to be wrong, but in the most unexpected way.
He suddenly felt a strong force act in his body, and he was once again pushed back to hit the wall behind. He subconsciously pushed himself off the ground and raised his head, only to find a bloodied corpse of the healer on the ground under the monster's tail that just raised.
'He actually used a skill to hide.' Ezra thought. But then, he also remembered not to move.
In the end, he did not even know how he died. This clearly was not a battle where the weak should be.
Ezra had expected life to go a little differently than the way it went, but it always seemed like the universe itself was against him.
Maybe if he was still alive he would be able to accomplish something in life, even though just a little. As long as it was enough for himself and for those dare to him to live happily and comfortably, it was enough.
He could feel that he had been disconnected with the world permanently, but a scene of existence still lingered in his very soul. Perhaps this was the final moments people talked about?
No.
That was actually before they drew their last breath..
Maybe this was what science meant when they said a person's brain still operated some seconds after death in a superfast moment of a mere second.
'I don't want to die.'
.
.
.
'What- am I even thinking? There isn't much to look forward to…'
If only there was something.. Maybe there was… And he just didn't know…
.
.
.
'There is something? There is something.'
.
.
With a long abandoned strength, his voice sounded, as though lost and afar…
.
'I DON'T WANT TO DIE!!'
.
.
.
In the end, that was it… There was nothing else to look forward to. The faint consciousness that remained was completely extinguished by time, and lost.
.
.
.
"Wake up…" A voice, lost in the endlessness of nothingness said as it called out.
Out of nowhere, for who knows how long, a stray consciousness flickered with some sense of life, albeit faint.
"Wake up!" The lost voice called out again, this time sounding a bit closer, almost found.
.
.
.
"WAKE UP!!!"
