Jesse crossed the room and slid to his knees in front of Gideon. “I know. She was right to look at you like that.”

When Jesse smoothed his hands along the tops of Gideon’s thighs, leaning against his legs as he slipped his fingers around the other man’s waist, Gideon closed his eyes. “Really? I couldn’t protect you two. I promised, and something still got to you.”

“A part of me never believed Michelle. Couldn’t believe Michelle. Because she said that you were there and somebody still got Emma and almost killed me. But I knew that couldn’t be true. I knew you would never let that happen.” Jesse reached up to caress Gideon’s jaw. “You didn’t break any promise. You don’t break your promises to us.”

Muscles twitched beneath his fingertips. “Emma deserved so much better. Part of me thinks we should forget the training, go grab her away from the schmuck, and hide for the rest of our lives.”
