Chapter 35

“What the hells for?” Cassandra demanded.

“I loved him, Cass,” Aiden said simply. “I can’t just…throw that away. And at least if I go to the memorial I’ll be able to say goodbye to him. The man I thought he was.”

“You don’t owe him anything,” Greg said. “Not after what he did.”

“I know. It’s not for him.” Aiden took another drink of coffee, trying to put the right words together to explain. “And maybe, with the memorial, he can rest. Leave here. But, I have to see it. I can’t…not know if he does or not.”

“I get it,” Cassandra said. She stood so she could put her hand on the back of Aiden’s neck. “I don’t like it, but I get it. I’ll go with you, then.”

Greg’s gaze snapped up to hers. He looked horrified. “And what if Tanner—” He winced and lowered his voice. “And what about you?”

“I’ll be fine.” Cassandra said it so offhandedly that Aiden was sure she wasn’t nearly as unconcerned as she let on. “Seriously, what would he want with me?”
