[BL] Checkmate: side story

City Z has a reputation of being the center of ability users in all of Asia, as well as being the homebase of many organisations. Amongst those is Roses; a rising organisation founded by a small group of friends and led by a girl with a seemingly easy going personality. Kang Seojun who had recently turned 20 came face to face with a problem he had been avoiding until the same issue was raised by his younger brother, and that is what is their future going to be? Seeing his friends having their lives planned out, he realised apart from doing whatever his parents wanted, he had never made a decision of his own. In the midst of his dilemma, the leader of Roses approached him with an opportunity to work for them for 3 months, a trial period. The question is, what will this 3 months do for him? Will he find a reason to stay permanently? Will he return to university? And will he, be able to see a future carved out by himself?

chapter 4 - partner

"All done?" Hyunwoo looked over Seojun's shoulder as the sound of footsteps approached their direction. Kei nodded as he sent out a message with a slight distressed expression on his face; now only wearing one glove.

"Then, shall we celebrate?"

Kei looked up from his phone, thinking for a moment, "you two go on ahead, report back, I need to take care of something first," he said as he took the other can of coffee from Hyunwoo's hand.

HQ

"Hi, hi, we're back," the two approached the front desk once again. Compared to the other times Seojun had seen them idling around, it seemed the two were busy this time, one was on a phone call and typing away, the other, the same lady from earlier that morning, had brought out the giant folder again. That same organised folder was being flipped about, chunks taken out every now and then, and new documents added in, the printer working overtime trying to process all the work needed.

"Ah hello, welcome back," the lady looked up as she pushed the folder clasp shut, "commission number?"

"210"

"Just a second.." she muttered as she typed the numbers into her computer, "alright that's all done for you," She smiled as she clicked down on her mouse to confirm the completion.

"Thank you," they replied in unison. Hyunwoo let out a light chuckle as Seojun looked at him, avoiding the other's gaze on purpose.

He cleared his throat before speaking again, "how do you want to celebrate your first job, Mr Kang?" Tilting his head as he turned towards the other, eyes finally meeting.

""Hmm.." Seojun checked the time on his phone, 2:37pm, it was still early in the day for most celebrations...no, who was he kidding, it was too early to drink.

Hyunwoo caught on to his hesitation, just as he was about to make a suggestion, a voice called out to him.

"Hyunwoo," they looked in the direction of the voice, the girl walked towards them, followed by a man with white hair trailing, one hand in his jean pocket, the other holding his phone, staring with a frown on his face.

"You better keep your promise, if he gets moody over this you owe me one," the guy sighed.

"Yeah yeah whatever," Haneul waved in dismissal, "you guys done then?"

They nodded.

"Huh, where's Kei?" She peered behind them.

"He said he had something to take care of so he stayed behind."

"...alright," she added, "oh by the way, this is Yuu, he'll be your partner for jobs in the future," she gestured at the white hair. His eyes looked up from his phone, the golden colour meeting Seojun's vibrant green; their saturation competing in harmony.

"Nice to meet you," the guy extended his hand.

"You too," Seojun shook it in response. He could see they were similar in height now that they're stood right infront of each other, probably only about an inch taller than Seojun, compared to the illusion when next to Haneul. The frown that was previously on the guy's face was now on Hyunwoo's instead, as he watched the scene annoyed. Still, he kept his hands to himself, didn't say anything and just simply looked to the girl.

"..." she let out a little sigh, "right, introduction's over. Seojun you can go home for the day."

"Already?"

She nodded, "I told you before didn't I? You wouldn't be here 24/7, only when you're needed."

"Right."

"We will see you tomorrow then," Hyunwoo said, ready to leave with him.

"Nope," a hand grabbed his shirt, "Kim Hyunwoo you're staying." The girl said sternly.

"..damn," he sighed, then gave Seojun a little wave, "bye then."

Two watched as he left the building, whilst the white hair felt his phone vibrate, his face lighting up as he answered the call.

"..wait."

"What is it?"

Haneul turned to Hyunwoo, "you said Kei stayed behind, why?"

Hyunwoo shrugged.

"You didn't ask him?"

He turned to face her too, "...oops?"

Her mouth dropped a little, "Kim Hyunwoo you idiot," she smacked him, "do you know how dangerous that is?"

"Whatever, it's Kei he'll be fine," he tried to brush it off, a little hesitation in his tone.

The same can be heard from the girl as she replied, "did you forget what happened la-"

Their conversation came to a pause as they saw the red hair come through the entrance, his hair brighter than usual in the sunlight.

The girl rushed over to him, even from a distance Hyunwoo could see his friend being scolded, holding his hands up in a surrender as he tried to calm her down.

Then suddenly she turned around and shouted, "Yuu take him with you!" Pointing at Hyunwoo.

"...tch." Yuu clicked his tongue, his phone call had just ended, he massaged his head before looking at Hyunwoo, "let's go," he said before muttering something under his breath, "there goes our alone time..."

Hyunwoo made a face as he tried to ignore the last bit.

"Oh," Yuu looked up, like a good idea just popped into his head, walking up to Haneul and Kei as Hyunwoo followed. "Hey," he tapped the girl's shoulder, "get Lu to take us."

She raised her eyebrows, "why? Can't you just go there yourself?"

"Come on itll be quicker."

As he tried to convince the other, Hyunwoo gave a look to Kei, like telepathy, you alright?

Kei smiled, giving a little thumbs up and a wink.

"Fine," Haneul groaned, finally giving in as the white hair grinned, "Lu."

The guy with glasses appeared infront of them almost in an instant.

"Take them to his studio."

In the span of a second, the two appeared in a dim room, surrounded by brick walls. On the other end of the room, a guy sat on an office chair, his arms crossed, one leg over the other, and eyes closed. His glasses reflected the screens of the devices surrounding him, the computer on the desk taking up most of the surface, accompanied by two more monitors beside it.

"Mii," the guy slowly opened his eyes as the gentle voice called out, at the same time, all the computers shut off. The chair sprung around as he turned, his head tilting up as his eyes met the two. His glasses accompanying a dark forest green with long lashes. His hair was an even darker shade of green, almost close to black in the absence of lighting from the screens.

"We're here," Yuu walked over to him, an arm holding onto the chair as he leaned in to kiss him.

"Hey," he pushed the other off, peeking behind him. Hyunwoo gave a little wave as he nodded at him. He turned back to Yuu as the other began pouting, "you're here for the strategy thing right?"

Yuu nodded.

"Hmm.." Mii frowned, "it'll be a bit hard since he's not here but," he sighed, turning back to face the computers again as they booted up, "I guess we can test a few ways out."
