After killing the Hound of Culain, he becomes the guard in place of the dog he killed hence his name 'Cu' or 'Hound'. He then raised the dogs children until they could take their fathers place. He was a guard for around 1/3 of his life... Since he died at 27 after strapping himself to a rock, either with his own intestines or a belt depending on depiction.
