Such A Bitter Soul

(Daniel POV)

She seemed to hesitate for a while. "You seemed to be forgetting something," she said, completely confusing me.

"And what do you mean by that?"

"You've forgotten about the main reason we agreed to this in the first place," she responded.

"And what could that possibly be?"

"My people, they are the main reason I am here. You promised to give them a place to stay once you get the papers and I sign the contract."

"I promised to give them a place in their place, but they have to be at least countless miles away from me because I hate someone interfering or invading my privacy and place."

She was stunned by my words. "My people aren't like that. They aren't gossip mongers or thieves to just invade others' privacy and place, like the way you just said it."

"I just stated what I want in order for there to be peace."

"So, when do you intend to get them a place to stay?"

I sighed upon hearing her question. It was obvious that she was trying to play smart on me, but that was where she made a slight mistake. No one could possibly play smart on me.

"You said it yourself. I'll give your people a place, but that's after you've signed the contract and give me the papers of the land, without that then every other thing would be put on hold."

She let out a long sigh and laid back on her chair. "Fine then, but how would I know you'll keep to your words then if I give you the papers?"

Hmm, she was indeed smart or maybe still trying to because she seemed to be easy to read.

"You can hold the papers until I fulfill what I promised."

She finally looked calm a bit, but she remained tense. "If I sign it, would I go immediately with you?"

"What else do you have in your possession? Speaking of possession, how do you still have the papers with you even after practically destroying everything you had?"

"My dad didn't keep it in the house, knowing quite well the number of thieves that lure around just to get their hands on it."

"So where did he keep it?" I asked curiously. The family sounded a bit interesting.

"That's not for anyone to know, or even everyone." She said almost immediately.

"That's a shame," I muttered, though I knew better than anyone how smart the man was and even his daughter appeared to be smart as well.

"I doubt it. So, I just have to sign this paper and that's all."

"Correct." I replied shortly. She took the pen and read through the files again before finally signing it. I felt pleased for no reason, or maybe I was glad that I could now focus more on the project than to keep bothering myself with the farmers.

"Good then," I signaled for my assistant to come closer.

"Can I go back to get a few things? Personal things actually, then get the papers as well."

"Sir?"

"Let's go," I stood up. Her eyes widened as she scanned me.

She must be wondering what I was doing.

"Are you coming, or you've finally decided to stay here instead?" I asked, raising a brow, and she instantly got to her feet.

We got into the car and drove back to her place. She quickly stepped out to get her things, and my assistant joined. I sat in the car for some time but suddenly got the urge to meet them inside, and I did that without being reluctant.

The building was built with bamboo, and it was also small compared to the other one before. She was shocked when she turned around only to see me standing there while leaning on the wall.

"What are you doing?"

"Boss?"

They said in chorus. I checked my wristwatch. "You guys are taking my time, so I figured you both might need some help."

"What? You want to help me?"

I ignored her and instead searched for anything that I could do. However, there wasn't much I could do there since they were almost done. I just took some clothes that were still unpacked and started shoving them into her bag.

"Hey, hey," she rushed to my side and dragged the clothes I held away from my grips. "Are you crazy? You can't just shove my clothes like that, you'll wrinkle them." She said as she looked at me with wide eyes.

Wrinkle them? Was she for real?.

"And why would that matter? It's not like you've ever used an iron before in your life," I said in spite. She shot her eyes at me with a flushed face.

"And I am more than certain that you've never touched your clothes intending to washing them before," she snapped back.

I smirked while I stalked towards her slowly. I only stopped when I felt I was close enough. "What did you say?" I asked, glaring at her.

"Yeah you had me sound and clear. The difference between us is the possibility of you losing everything you have in your possession one day. Like the saying, from grace to grass, and by then you'd only feel the need to panic in of fear. While I, on the other hand, can already handle about being poor, which means I'd even do better when I get rich," she said with gritting teeth.

I scoffed. "I see you're forgetting something. You see, even if you try from today to every single day of your life, you won't still get rich, not even as my wife," I told her, but it was more of a reminder.

Her eyes widened for a moment and I could see how they slowly got teary, but she blinked and looked away.

"You're such a bitter soul. I'm certain this is where you derived your joy from someone's pain, but I'm not like anyone. I might never be rich, which I'm thankful for because I'd rather be poor than be rich but heartless or useless to others. I mean, what's the use of being rich if others see you as someone who adds nothing to them, no good impact, nothing! Just a useless, wealthy asshole."

I clenched my fits when I heard her venomous words. Darryl must've sensed the danger in the air because he instantly came to stand in front of me with her bags in his hands.

"Boss, I've gotten everything, so we can go," he said, trying to get my attention.

"Good, you can go. I'll meet you in the can, but first I'd like to have a conversation alone with her."

Darryl sighed in defeat before he walked away.

My eyes were stuck on someone in front of me and she tried so hard to avoid them.
