Rotmg

Rotmg is short for Realm of the Mad God and is a surprisingly popular game considering its core concept.

It's basically a bullethell, top down, mmorpg with permadeath. The game is very unforgiving and death is inevitable (of course the better you get, the less you'll die). Everytime you time you die, your character is deleted including everything that was equipped. Additionally, there is only a limited amount of storage that can be used to safeguard items.

Every death is very punishing and at the same time a huge motivator to quit. How such a game has survived for such a long time is simply amazing.

Recently the game has even had a MASSIVE upgrade from java to unity.
