The Polaris is known as the North Star, since it can be used to find the direction north. It's position stays constant and can thus be used as a means of orientation in an emergency.
It's basically the sky's North Pole and the sky rotates around it. The error margin is around 0.75° since that's how far it is offset from celestial north (the true north point).
