Addictions are very hard to get over with especially if they involve the usage of slightly less l3gal substances. One thing you have to remember is, you're never really safe from a relapse. It doesn't matter if it's been 5 years, it doesn't matter if it's been 30. If you don't tell your doctor about prior conditions, you run the risk of being prescribed something such as painkillers that will cause you to relapse.
The easy method is to just never touch those things and it'll be impossible to develop an addiction.
