I think She's Special- another death recorded

"Where's my baby?" Carrie asked as soon as her eyes flew open. Her words alerted Rachel who was listening to the silent beep of the monitor. She'd been awaiting her awake for a reason.

"You're awake" Rachel exclaimed.

"Here they are!" She said wheeling two carts containing two pretty babies towards Carrie.

"Babies actually remember??" Rachel added.

"Yeah babies" Carrie sat up gently and reached out to one of them but stopped mid air and reached out to the other. She stared at the baby with so much awe.

This almost brought tears to Rachel's eyes as she suddenly remembered Elona. Now back to her reason for awaiting her, she thought.

"This should go smoothly" she thought as she'd already gone through Carrie's contact information. She'd found no one. No husband, relatives, parents nor friends stated.

She wouldn't mind giving out one of her girls to Elona right? But obviously not the one she was staring at right now. Carrie seemed to be in love with her already. Rachel sighed grateful that they didn't look much alike.

"But that's unfair" she muttered to herself as she looked down at the other girl who was sleeping soundly.

"She's beautiful too you know" she whispered but wishing Carrie would hear that. "Elona would love her," she concluded.

"Ehm... Carrie" Rachel Started. " I know it's none of my business and this may seem hard for you but…" she rattled on but was cut short by Carrie.

"She's beautiful!" Carrie finally spoke looking mesmerized. No! hypnotized was the word.

"I think..I think..." Carrie started saying but was cut short by her heavy breathing.

"Carrie!!!" Rachel screamed in fear and reached out to her. She heard the monitors beep too fast. She stared for a mini second, realizing what it meant, she scrambled for the door and raced yet again that afternoon to the doctor's office all the while screaming "Doctor Won".

"Special" was the last word she heard from Carrie before scrambling for the door.

"I think she's... special?" Rachel repeated under her breath trying to put together what Carrie's words meant as she returned seconds later with the Doctor.

"Oh my Gosh!" Doctor Won gasped as her eyes flew straight to the beeping monitors. Though it beeped quite slowly now with just one running straight line left with a little crook at the end.

"Get me the shocker!" Won screamed at a nearby nurse who'd come running in alongside her.

"1! 2!! 3!!!" Ji Won counted as she placed the shocker on Carrie's chest.

"Oh my God! Oh my God!!" Rachel whispered with a soft, cracked voice. A little line of tears rushed down her cheeks. She couldn't remember the last time she needed God. He'd left her to the cruel hands of her father years ago.

"1! 2!! 3!!!" Ji Won repeated the procedure harder this time on Carrie's chest and the monitor did one final beep. Everyone knew what this meant. Even Rachel did.

Her world suddenly stopped spinning. she could hear noises surrounding her as she dropped to the floor.

She heard someone scream "Carrie! Carrie!!" But she wasn't sure if that was actually her voice.

"Rachel!" She felt someone shake her softly. She knew the voice. It belonged to Doctor Won.

She wished she didn't have to reply. She just wanted to be left alone in her own lonely world. People kept leaving her.

The people she cared most about especially.

"Yes Doctor" she replied blinking hardly to ward off imaginary tears. She'd lost her tears, she had none left again to cry.

Life was just gonna do as it wished. She'd already come to terms with that.

"Go through Carrie's Contact information and call someone".

"If you can't find anyone, contact the orphanage" she added as an afterthought.

"Well I already did that but couldn't find anyone" Rachel muttered to herself.

"What did you say?" Ji won, who'd made a move to walk away, turned back to face her.

"Huh? Nothing!" Rachel quickly covered up. She hadn't realized she'd thought that out loudly.

Her plan must still stick through and not a single soul must know.

"I'm sorry Carrie" she mouthed in Carrie's direction.

"I hope you forgive me someday".

"You guys were close huh?" Ji Won's voice jerked her out of her thoughts. She said nothing but just nodded.

"Well! I must hurry" Rachel thought to herself. She couldn't bear to watch Elona wake up and the glint earlier this morning disappearing from her face.

She was quite sure by now someone must have been contacted for her. From her contact information, she'd discovered they were bastardly rich. She was also sure they'd take care of the baby but what about "Ella?"

She'd mentally named the "special" baby Carrie had referred to.

"Oh! May her gentle soul rest in peace" she muttered and did a sign of a cross as her sad mood returned.

"Gabriella" Rachel whispered to the baby who was eyeing her suspiciously. Her bluish green eyes she noticed must have been what captivated Carrie.

Elona's dead baby had something close to that.

"No! Rachel, stop! Get used to this". She cautioned herself. The deed had been done. Now, Elona's baby was pretty much alive.

"Gabriella, I'm going to keep you" she said to the baby with a rather serious face which only made the latter look at her more intensely.

"Don't worry, you'd get used to me" Rachel added with a smirk.

"Well, seems my life's getting pretty much interesting because of you" she tickled her little bundle of joy.

"Mine!" She said out loud. It sounded so strange to her. Few days ago she could swear that she wanted nothing to do with kids.

At a very tender age, she'd watched her father, a drunk, beat up and molest her mother everyday. She too wasn't left out in the molesting and her mum wasn't bold enough to stop it. Her parents death in a car crash, especially her dad, meant peace at last for her though just for a short period of time.

She'd moved on to stay with a distant relative and her suffering continued. She ran off one day to an orphanage and when she finally came of age, she moved out to experience the real world and fend for herself. Till date, she's had no desire to get married nor have kids.

But it seems, the latter is about to change now.

"Carrie!" Rachel whispered in a silent sob.

"Hope you don't mind me keeping her," she continued. By now, she'd returned Ella to the baby's ward. She just hoped she wouldn't forget to take her back home once her shift ended.

"Huh! What sort of mother forgets her baby?" She pinched herself at her silliness.

"My baby" she whispered half dreaming.

"I have a baby!!!" She shrieked and immediately called herself in order to avoid drawing attention.

As she walked back to her post, she mentally ticked off all the baby things she'd need to purchase. Her house needed a makeover.

She suddenly felt nervous.

"You can do this Rachel. I know this is gonna be so tough..." she forewarned herself.

"...and sometimes you'd just wanna go drop her off at the orphanage…"

"No!" She almost screamed as soon as she said that.

"You can't drop her off at the orphanage Rachel"

"She can't live the life you lived," she cautioned herself. Then she heard a voice call unto her. It sounded so distant.

"Must be my thoughts," she said, waving it off.

"Gabbie's special. Carrie thinks so, I think so…"

"Rachel!" She heard her name being called before she collided her right foot with the wall.

"Ouch!" She yelped, clutching her foot. That voice belonged to Hannah.

"Rachel, are you okay?" Hannah asked, rushing over to her. Rachel saw that it was definitely Hannah when she finally looked up.

"You're….back so early?" Rachel stammered.

"I mean what are you even doing here? You're not supposed to be back here until…"

"I know," Hannah replied, cutting her off. She helped Rachel up and suddenly there was a little smile on her face.

"You're smiling!" Rachel stated noticing quickly.

"You seem happy," she added in a rather loud voice.

"Something happened?" She kept asking Hannah who didn't seem like she'd give her a reply anytime soon. Her face radiated with so much happiness that it almost burned Rachel or so she thought.

"You don't want to talk about it I guess" Rachel pried as she took a seat beside her and reached out for Carrie's information file to go through it one last time. She couldn't leave any stone unturned. But Hannah only shook her head.

"Must be something good then" Rachel concluded, finally giving up.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Hannah asked, dropping the documents she was going through and hitting both palms on the table.

This made Rachel jerk up a bit in surprise as Hannah turned to face her fully.

"Sure! I'm good. Why are you asking?" Rachel replied, returning back to her work.

"I heard a lot happened today" Hannah stated in a very little voice. This made Rachel finally give up on her work as she turned to face her.

"Yeah!" Rachel started with a sigh.

"We lost two patients" she continued dejectedly.

"And they seemed close to you, I heard?" Hannah pried on.

"I'm fine" Rachel replied after a short while returning to her work to signal the end of the conversation.

"You've changed" Hannah added as an after thought while returning to her work. Rachel looked up sharply but Hannah was fully focused on the papers before her.

Rachel gave a small smile and looked away. For some minutes she thought they were done talking.

"It's a good thing" Hannah suddenly leaned close to whisper. A smile spread out on Rachel's lips and she opened her mouth to say something but was cut short by the entry of a new patient who'd just been directed to them. She got up to attend to her but Hannah held her back.

"I'll handle this," Hannah said, giving Rachel a wink.

"You should rest," she added before moving away to guide the patient.

"Well you still haven't told me what you're doing here" Rachel called after them. She was sure Hannah had heard her but she gave no reply. Suddenly her eyes focused on the patient. There was something off about her but she just couldn't place it despite the fact that she looked haggard yet neat and walked too slowly, partially leaning on Hannah for support. Her countenance was quite confusing as well. The very opposite of what she felt with the two women Earlier.

She made a sign of the cross Hoping they wouldn't lose anyone again today before walking away and wondering why she was suddenly all religious.

"Maybe I've truly changed," she whispered to no one in particular.
