Not long after they had gotten changed, a servant came up and knocked on the door, saying that lunch was ready.
Unlike the crowd last night, Song Qingcheng and Yu Jing were the only two people in the Yu family's dining hall today.
When the dishes were served, Yu Jing looked up and asked Auntie Xu, "Is my mom home?"
Auntie Xu placed the plate on the table and said, "Madam came back from the hospital this morning. She's catching up on sleep."
When Auntie Xu returned to the kitchen, Song Qingcheng picked up her bowl of rice. Yu Tingchuan's deep and dark eyes in the morning came to her mind. She said, "I saw your Second Uncle when I went to the washroom this morning."
"Oh, my second uncle sometimes spends the night here." Yu Jing continued the conversation while she was peeling the crab. "Especially when my great-grandfather is at home." At this point, she leaned up close to Song Qingcheng and whispered, "Last night, my great-grandfather even urged my second uncle to get married quickly. He said he wouldn't be able to die in peace if he didn't have a great-grandson."
Song Qingcheng did not respond when she heard this.
Many prominent families still practiced favoring the male child over the female child, no matter how much society had progressed.
Obviously, the Yu family had the same attitude.
Yu Jing didn't really mind this. She continued, "Our family owns such a huge estate, of course, we have to ensure succession. Given how my dad is, we can only rely on my second uncle and youngest uncle. My youngest uncle is too young. Moreover, Great-Grandfather doesn't really like him. Hence, the great responsibility of carrying on the family line will definitely fall on my second uncle."
At this point, Auntie Xu walked out with a pot of soup.
When Aunty Xu heard Second Uncle being mentioned, she took the initiative to explain, "CEO Yu and Chairman both went out in the morning. They seemed to have business matters to settle."
"Isn't it the weekend today?" Yu Jing asked while chewing on the crab leg.
Auntie Xu smiled as she replied, "Busy people like CEO Yu and Chairman don't treat the weekend as rest days, for sure." As she spoke, she realized that Song Qingcheng had not taken any of the fish. She asked with concern, "Are these Huai dishes not to your liking?"
"It's not that." Song Qingcheng smiled. "I prefer vegetables."
Yu Jing chimed in. "I knew she didn't like meat. Otherwise, she wouldn't be so slim."
After lunch, the two girls returned to their room.
Yu Jing was not a person who enjoyed studying. With Song Qingcheng by her side, she had no choice but to pick up a book to read. However, in less than half an hour, she had sprawled over the desk and fallen asleep without completing any of the key questions that Song Qingcheng had picked out for her.
After a while, Song Qingcheng looked up from her book and towards Yu Jing who was sound asleep beside her.
Her gaze rested on the girl for a few seconds, then took a thin blanket from the bed, and draped it over her.
…
By the time Yu Jing woke up, Song Qingcheng had already completed her review of geography and was looking at the mathematics questions.
"Why didn't you take an afternoon nap?" Yu Jing wiped the drool off the corner of her mouth and looked at the time. It was already 3 pm.
Song Qingcheng handed her a geography textbook. "I've marked everything for you. Remember to take a good look at these important points."
Yu Jing recognized that it was her brand new geography textbook. She hugged Song Qingcheng's slender body and said obsequiously, "You're so good to me. If only you'd sit next to me during the exams…"
Song Qingcheng lowered her eyes and said as she flipped through the pages, "You could suggest this to your form teacher."
"No way. If I did that, he'll definitely get the invigilator to keep his eye on me the whole time once the exam commences!" Yu Jing shook her head and quickly came up with another idea. "How about this, you hand in your papers five minutes early and text me the answers once you're outside."
Song Qingcheng looked up and smiled when she saw the look of eager anticipation on Yu Jing's face. "No."
Yu Jing pursed her lips seriously. "Actually, it was just a casual remark."
