As the hours ticked by and midnight approached, Wang Yunzhi's frustration and disappointment grew. It was her birthday, and the surprise her husband, Chen Dongxi, had promised had turned into nothing but a lonely night on Mulan Mountain.
Her beautiful eyes brimmed with tears. "It's my birthday today... He said he had a surprise, but now he's not even here, and I'm all alone." Her voice cracked with sadness as she began to pack up her tent and belongings. "I'm done with him. He won't be able to sweet-talk me again."
Just as she was about to leave, a rustling noise from the nearby bushes made her freeze.
Swish, swish, swish~
From the shadows of the bushes, a human head emerged, watching Wang Yunzhi as she tearfully packed up her things.
"Huh... Finally," Qi Lin muttered from his hiding spot. "If I were any later, the English teacher in black stockings would've gone home."
Watching Wang Yunzhi carefully, Qi Lin knew he couldn't let her leave just yet. He quickly climbed a nearby tree, his dark eyes gleaming with amusement.
This is going to be fun, he thought, his mind racing with ideas.
Thanks to his God-level ventriloquism, Qi Lin could imitate not only human voices but also the sounds of animals and nature. It was the perfect tool to create the right atmosphere.
From the treetops, he grinned and took a deep breath. Then, he began imitating the sounds of wild animals:
"Roarrr~"
"Hissss~"
"Awooooo~"
His growling mimicry of tigers, poisonous snakes, and wild wolves echoed through the mountains, making it seem like the forest was teeming with dangerous beasts.
For Wang Yunzhi, the effect was immediate.
"Ah!" she screamed, her white arms trembling. She dropped her luggage, her face pale with fear. The terrifying sounds of predators seemed to close in on her from all sides.
"Roarrr~"
"Hissss~"
"Awooooo~"
Wang Yunzhi clamped a hand over her mouth to stop herself from making more noise. Her heart pounded wildly as she struggled not to panic. She could barely contain her tears, too scared to make a sound.
The beasts are getting closer... I can't let them hear me, she thought, her body shaking.
In a desperate attempt to protect herself, Wang Yunzhi dashed back inside her tent, pulling the thin blanket over her body. "If I hide and turn off the light, maybe they won't find me," she whispered to herself, teeth chattering.
Inside her dark tent, she huddled under the blanket, trembling from head to toe.
Outside, Qi Lin watched from a distance, barely able to hold back his laughter as he saw Wang Yunzhi scramble into her tent and turn off the lights. Cute, he thought, amused by her reaction.
Well, now that she's too scared to leave, I've succeeded in keeping her here. Time for the next step.
He climbed down from the tree and gathered the camping supplies he had prepared earlier. Carrying them to a nearby hillside not far from Wang Yunzhi's camp, he set up his own tent. It was close enough that Wang Yunzhi would notice the light once he turned it on.
After setting up the tent, Qi Lin switched on the light inside, making sure it would be visible from her position.
Inside Wang Yunzhi's tent, she was still shaking when she realized the wild animal noises had stopped.
Have they gone? she wondered. Slowly, she poked her head out from beneath the blanket, listening for any signs of danger.
Nothing. The only sound was the gentle chirping of crickets.
"Huh..." she breathed a sigh of relief, patting her chest as if she'd just survived a nightmare.
That's when she noticed something unusual—faint lights flickering outside her tent.
Huh? Wang Yunzhi blinked in surprise. "Why are there lights out there?"
She remembered clearly that she was supposed to be alone on the mountaintop tonight. Had someone else come to camp while she was hiding?
Maybe someone came to stargaze like me, she thought, her fear easing as hope replaced it. She had been terrified all alone, but if there was someone else camping nearby, maybe she wouldn't feel so scared anymore.
Maybe I should go over and say hello, she thought. If it's another woman, we could keep each other company.
With newfound determination, Wang Yunzhi opened her tent and carefully scanned the surroundings to make sure there were no wild animals lurking nearby. Satisfied that it was quiet, she hurried toward the lighted tent.
Inside Qi Lin's tent, the smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. He sat comfortably, knowing his plan was coming together perfectly.
She should be here any minute, he thought, a smile creeping across his face.
As he waited, he spotted a graceful figure approaching from outside his tent. Before he could say anything, a soft voice called out, filled with nervousness.
"Excuse me... I need to ask for your help."
Hearing Wang Yunzhi's voice, Qi Lin's grin widened. After so much preparation, I can finally taste the fruits, he thought, anticipating what would come next.
(one more... married woman?😏)
