Chapter 64

For the second time in his life, Evan finds himself responsible for taking a life. He can’t bring himself to let go of the gun as he rushes over to Rene, who’s leaning against the couch, clutching his pectoral, blood oozing through his fingers.

“Sit down,” Evan orders. Finally he puts the gun down, hands still shaking as he picks up his cell phone and dials 911.

Rene sits down and closes his eyes.

“Keep your eyes open,” Evan orders between asking for an ambulance and for them to send the police.

“Never been shot before,” Rene says, voice tight with pain.

“But you’ve been hurt bad. I’ve seen all those scars, felt every one of them. You’re tough. You can handle this. You’re going to just sit here and talk to me and wait for the ambulance,” Evan says firmly.

“Bossy,” Rene wheezes.

Evan wishes he had a stethoscope close so he could listen to Rene’s chest. The bullet entered high, but Evan can’t tell if it hit anything important, like a lung.
