Chapter 47

Evan changes the subject, and Rene’s thankful. They talk about nothing serious for the rest of the drive to Mr. Socks’ house. They arrive at the house, and Rene parks behind the cop cruiser that’s waiting outside.

“Officer, we spoke on the phone,” Rene calls when he spots a uniformed officer in the front yard.

“Rene Cornell? I’m Officer Raven. This must be the human doctor?” Officer Raven is a young Felis with ginger fur and hair. He looks over them both with casual interest but no distrust. He doesn’t stare at Evan, either.

“This is Dr. Kidd,” Rene introduces Evan.

“Right. Graham Socks is inside. He’s sitting in the family room. He’s spoken with the elders, and he’s happy to have you look around and run whatever tests you need to run,” Officer Raven says.

“Thank you. Can you keep an eye on him? Make sure he doesn’t leave, hide anything. And try to get a read on him. Tell us if he looks uncomfortable when we’re in certain places,” Rene asks.
