Chapter 21

“You’re freezing. Get under the covers,” Rene says.

Evan doesn’t argue. He steps away from Rene and gets into bed, pulling the duvet up. The bed’s still warm, like it hasn’t been that long since Rene woke up. “I’m sorry I interrupted your workout.”

Rene comes over and sits on the edge of the bed beside Evan. “Don’t be sorry. You know the night you found me out in the yard? I’d had a bad dream too. Don’t ask about what. I won’t tell you,” Rene says softly. “But it made me feel so bad I ran away from my own bedroom. I tried to run, literally, away from my thoughts, but it didn’t work. Running into you, that helped. So I understand needing to be around another person sometimes.”

“Thank you for sharing that. If someone as strong as you can feel like that, it makes me feel less silly for letting a dream bother me so much.” Evan can’t help being a little embarrassed still, but what Rene’s admitted helps.
