Chapter 27: Room Service

*The Black Feather Tavern*

We stared at the door, frozen still as we watched the shadow of the man pass back and forth under the crack.

"Rilian?" asked April, and a second shadow approached. "No, last I saw him, he was out at the bar."

"Oh, I could have sworn I saw him come back here," said Abel.

My heart was pounding so hard that Rilian wrapped his arms around me to muffle the sound. Vampires had incredible hearing. I was praying silently that the music and the clutter of spices from the kitchen would confuse his senses.

The closet was too small there was nowhere to hide. All Abel had to do was open the door, and we would come spilling out like a can of biscuits.

"He might have used the service elevator," said April. "It's on that side of the wall behind the door. Rilian is easily distracted; he probably went to grab something from his apartment."

I closed my eyes, holding my breath.

"Yeah, probably," said Abel, starting to walk away. "I'll just call his phone."
