Lou found a job of his own, at the shop not too far from his apartment. Slowly but surely he began to believe he really was safe from Grimaldi and his people.

Walter came into town as often as he could, but only after spending quality time with his daughter. Then came the call Lou had been dreading since the beginning of their relationship. The one where Walter said, “I’m sorry but something came up at the last minute. I promise I’ll get out there again soon.”

Lou didn’t argue. How could he? But he was certain the call signaled the beginning of the end.

“You’re what?” Daniel Carpenter looked at him in utter disbelief.

“I’m resigning. I’m burned out.”

“Take a vacation. Take a long one if you have to. Spend time with your daughter. Then when you’re ready, come back.”
