Between the Cracks

Guards on horses spilled out of the castle gates, one leading them with the familiar glint of a scroll that had a new law written in it. As they approached, villagers cleared a path for the horses to galloped through. Every so once in a while, the guards stopped to announce the new law.

Alex scoffed. A new law already? Usually the laws were created with a month between each one. This time it was only three weeks since the last law was announced and each one sounded more and more silly with each one written. ´the king really wants to catch us, huh?´ She thought.

The murmuring of villagers got louder, breaking Alex out of her thoughts. The horse approached.

¨PEOPLE OF ALENDUR!,¨ the guard announced. ¨A TRAGIC LOSS HAS BEEN EXPERIENCED IN THE ROYAL FAMILY!!¨ That wasn´t normal. ¨YOUR KING, HAS DIED!¨ gasps filled the streets. ¨HE HAS DIED FROM A ASSASSIN, PRESUMED TO BE FROM OUR ENEMY, LATHEN!"

As murmurs filled the streets, Alex slipped into the ally. Crouching behind a brick building, she looked for the space in between the cement. Apon finding it, Alex reached into her bag and pulled out a thin plate of silver with two lined marked into it's smooth exterior. Alex slid it into the small space.

She pressed her ear against the wall, being careful to not let the silver plate fall in. She waited for around a minute, the heard two soft knocks from inside the wall. She knocked back.

A soft click came from beneath her. Crouching, she wedged her fingers underneath a crack big enough to wedge her fingers into. She lifted.

A trap door with pieces of the cobblestone hanging off of a board. She slipped into a narrow tunnel underneath the trapdoor and caught it before it could thump against the stone.
