Ultimately, more than twenty Monster Cannons were successfully fired, and according to the analysis from Galaxy III, this volley caused tremendous casualties to the enemy.
Unfortunately, the enemy's warships were simply too numerous, and those casualties were not enough to cripple their combat capabilities.
Having experienced the power of the Monster Cannons, they began to concentrate fire on the Monster Cannons that were charging.
Both the soldiers of the Second Division and those operating the Monster Cannons fought until the last moment.
By then, the First Division and the civilian fleet had already put some distance between themselves and the battlefield, initially encountering only sporadic resistance. But as the fighting ended on the frontline, they faced increasingly greater obstacles to their escape.
The vanguard, the First Regiment, was completely spent, and the rearguard, the Third and Fourth Regiments, were out of ammunition too.
The civilian fleet suffered heavy losses.
If they continued to fight like this, the entire fleet would be whittled away while on the move.
It was time to make a decision. Jiang Yu said to Number Three, 28 light-years away, "Prepare to execute my orders!"
Without waiting for Number Three to say more, he immediately cut off the communication.
After speaking, he flipped a switch on the command console, and from beneath it, a red button popped out.
Jiang Yu pressed the button without hesitation. It was the switch for the real-time communication Self-Destruct System; pressing it cut off all contact with the Solar System.
This was a safeguard against advanced civilizations tracking the Solar System's location through quantum entanglement.
Now at an impasse, Jiang Yu feared such technology falling into enemy hands.
By this point, Jiang Yu had completely regained his composure, and he said to Cao Yang, "It's a do-or-die situation now."
Cao Yang took a deep breath, "Inform all civilian ships, hide in place!
"Once a hiding spot is located, immediately enter hibernation and wait for reinforcements!
"Attention all ships, keep moving! Make the enemy think we are continuing forward!"
Cao Yang had no idea how far the enemy's radar could detect, but now he was grasping at straws.
Not far from the human fleet, there was a White Planet, along with two moons, and numerous asteroids.
Though the civilian ships were massive, two to three kilometers long, hiding in the vastness of space meant they were still not easily detectable.
However, if the enemy's radar detected the movement trajectory of the ships, they would discover that civilian ships were hiding on the White Planet.
Yet, even with just one percent of hope, they strived to allow more people to survive.
A planet was so large that even if the enemy's radar detected ships hiding there, searching for them would be arduous.
The battle intensified, and fewer and fewer warships remained beside Cao Yang.
Suddenly, the ship shook violently, and Galaxy III immediately reported: "We've been hit on the left side, causing a chain of explosions."
With a stern face, Cao Yang decisively ordered the chief of staff, "Seal off the explosion area quickly, evacuate the combat personnel on the left side, and in one minute, jettison the left section of the ship."
The chief of staff complied, "Yes!" He immediately issued the retreat order for the combat personnel on the left side of the warship and prepared to seal off that section.
But the data from Galaxy III showed that the explosions were occurring faster than anticipated.
The chief of staff urgently reported to Cao Yang, "Commander, the chain explosions are happening too fast. They are expected to reach the ship's nuclear engine installations in twenty seconds."
Cao Yang's eyes deepened, "Jettison the left section of the ship immediately!"
The Chief of Staff hesitated for a second before accepting the command, "Yes!"
Galaxy III reminded Cao Yang, "Commander, there are still eleven combat personnel inside the left hull who haven't evacuated, including the ship's executive officer, Byron Winston."
Sitting firmly in the captain's seat, Cao Yang hesitated for half a second, or perhaps even less, "Disengage immediately!"
The Chief of Staff immediately sealed off the entire left hull and carried out the disengagement operation.
Cao Yang then ordered, "Remotely control the jet system of the left hull, use the disengaged hull as decoy targets to disrupt the enemy's offensive!"
The combat staff then reported, "Report to the captain, escort ship P-1655 has been destroyed by the enemy!"
Jiang Yu and Cao Yang watched the entire process of the P-1655 exploding from the huge holographic screen that occupied an entire wall of the captain's quarters.
The warship was hit directly at its vital point, the combat personnel didn't even have time to board the life pods, and a massive explosion instantaneously annihilated the P-1655 escort ship.
Cao Yang was preparing to adjust the combat formation, moving the entire right wing closer to a nearby planet to make full use of the planet as a cover.
Just then, the command room suddenly shook, and a piercing alarm sounded abruptly.
Cao Yang asked the dozen or so staff members, "What's happened?"
The Chief of Staff broke out in a cold sweat on his forehead, "Commander, the nuclear reactor is damaged, we can no longer provide power for the warship."
Without the power, the weapon system would soon be paralyzed.
Cao Yang glanced back at Jiang Yu, "This is as far as we can go!"
Jiang Yu nodded slightly, as if his eyes were saying, "I know you've done your best, we all have."
The Chief of Staff urged Cao Yang, "Commander!"
Cao Yang gave the order, "Command Q-122 to take over command! Dive towards the White Planet! All hands prepare for crash landing!"
The civilian ships had basically all taken cover; the command ship was no longer able to play any role on the battlefield and would slow down the fleet's speed. Now, the only thing to do was to hide on the nearby White Planet.
Only, this White Planet had not yet been surveyed, not even whether its surface was solid, liquid, or gaseous was known.
The dive began, and the ship shook violently, indicating that the planet had a dense atmosphere.
All in the command room prepared for a hard landing, Jiang Yu impassively watched the surface of the planet projected on the holographic screen.
The pure white land had no signs of life, and the command ship seemed out of place, like a grain of sand in a bucket of milk, not fitting in with this pure white world.
As the hull touched down, Jiang Yu couldn't help grasping the armrests of his seat, but the violent jolt he had anticipated did not happen. Instead, the warship pierced through the planet's crust, sinking continuously into the pure white surface layer.
The Chief of Staff was somewhat panicked, "Could it be that the planet's surface isn't solid?"
At that moment, nobody could answer the Chief of Staff's question, after all, the people on the command ship were the first humans to visit this planet.
The momentum of the ship's descent gradually slowed until it came to a complete stop.
Jiang Yu noticed from the holographic screen that the solid matter outside the warship had turned into a liquid.
Cao Yang ordered the Chief of Staff, "Immediately analyze the white substance surrounding the warship! All combat staff come here!"
This command ship had over one hundred and forty crew members, with only more than seventy individuals being ship operators, while the rest were Cao Yang's staff and subordinates from the Wallfacer Office of Jiang Yu.
They had just started discussing the current situation when the Chief of Staff came over with an incredulous look to report to Cao Yang, "The substance around the warship, it's actually ice and snow!"
