"Happy birthday, Alseace!" An old woman smiled in a tattered dress with so many patches to cover the holes in her dress, holding a young skinny boy's cheek with messy long gray hair. She was the caretaker of the orphanage, and her name was Suzie. She was the only one left who was kind enough to stay and took care of the orphans without getting paid.
A girl with the same hair color as Alseace, dark gray messy hair ran and hugged Alseace so tightly. She was Alseace's older sister, and her name was Alecia LaRoze.
"You're fifteen years old now!" Alecia grinned, and she was the only one who didn't look like a neglected child in the orphanage because of her silky smooth hair and bright white skin. "Now we are at the same age again," Alecia giggled as she kept hugging Alseace. "Anyway, Aluca is waiting for you outside. Come!" Alecia grabbed and dragged Alseace's skinny wrist.
Suzie waved her hand as she watched both of them leave the orphanage with a gentle and weak smile.
Alseace didn't remember much about his childhood because all he remembers was a man who brought him to the orphanage with Alecia and Aluca ten years ago. Alecia also didn't know much about her childhood memories, but Aluca knew everything and the reason why they were sent to the orphanage.
The LaRoze family used to be a wealthy noble family and Atali LaRoze was the head of the family. He had a wife and a mistress that lived together, and both of them had children. The wife, Yurea had two sons and three daughters, while the mistress, Penelope had two sons and a daughter.
Aluca, Alecia, and Alseace were the children of Penelope, but unfortunately, Penelope passed away after she gave birth to Alseace. Without Penelope, the three of them didn't get much attention since Atali LaRoze preferred to raise Yurea's children.
One day, Atali's business went bankrupt and couldn't cover all the losses. He decided to go and ask his old friend for help who was in another kingdom with Yurea and her children. Unfortunately, they never came back and the worst part was the mansion they lived in had been sold to another noble family.
Aluca, Alecia, and Alseace were left behind and abandoned by their own father. The maids and butlers were shocked because they didn't know anything about it as well.
After trying to find any information about Atali LaRoze and didn't get a single hint of his whereabouts, the butler had no choice but to send the three of them to an orphanage. He kept trying to find Atali LaRoze from the noble who brought the mansion, but he didn't find anything from them as well.
In the end, the butler gave up and left them in the orphanage because that was the only thing he could do.
"Brother Aluca!" Alecia waved her hand at a man with the same hair color as Alecia and Alseace. He looked much older. In fact, he was three years older than those two with his fit, muscular body, and broadened shoulders.
"Happy birthday, Alseace," Aluca stroked Alseace's head gently with a huge grin on his face with a halberd resting on his chest. "Here, I have a present for you!" Aluca removed the sheathed sword from his waist and then gave it to him.
Aluca LaRoze worked as a town guard to help the orphanage and mostly because he wanted his younger sister and brother to live without worries. He had been a town guard for three years, and he had been rising his rank so that he could live comfortably with half of his income.
Alseace looked at the sword in Aluca's hands. He couldn't wait to look at the blade of the sword. Aluca then pointed the sword handle at Alseace so he could unsheath it and see the sword.
Alseace pulled the sword and it was just a normal sword, a sword that couldn't even be called a decent sword. It was thin and short that it could be called a short sword rather than a sword, but Alseace looked at it as if it was a legendary sword in a children's book.
"Thank you, brother Aluca!" Alseace's eyes were glimmering as he held the sword with both hands and looked at the tip of the blade.
"I'll teach you how to use a sword, so don't lose that sword, Al," Aluca smiled gently.
Alseace nodded his head repeatedly, but suddenly a sound of a bell was rung and his face turned pale in an instant. Alecia grabbed Alseace's wrist and she was trembling in fear because that bell sound was like a nightmare.
"Alseace, Alecia. Go back inside and find Miss Suzie. You both need to hide now," Aluca looked at the west with a cold expression.
"Brother Aluca," Alecia held Aluca's hand and she didn't want him to leave.
"This isn't the first time something like this happen. Your brother is strong and even stronger than you know, so I'll be back," Aluca smiled as he held Alecia's hand. "Your brother has been chosen by God, and this is my duty to keep our world safe from those monsters. So I have to go now," Aluca softened his expression to put Alecia at ease.
The people who were chosen by God were called the Candidates. They possessed something that not any ordinary person could achieve even if they tried their best in their whole lives. A system that God gifted to those who were chosen to strive and achieve something beyond imagination.
"Sister Alecia! Let's go and hide! Miss Suzie must have gathered all the other kids!" Alseace pulled Alecia's left wrist.
Alecia couldn't resist Alseace's strength and ended up getting dragged into the orphanage.
"Alseace! Protect your sister!" Aluca shouted.
Alseace nodded his head and stared at Aluca with a serious expression. He then closed the door in front of him and went to hide with Suzie and the other orphans.
Three years ago, when everything was normal as always, suddenly six bolts of lightning struck six kingdoms. The bolts of lightning didn't strike the ground, but exploded right above the ground, leaving a crack in the air.
After that phenomenon, God chose a few people and made them Candidate. They became strong with amazing feats that made them they ray of hope for humanity. To face the monstrous creatures that came out of the crack.
"Brother Aluca is strong, this will be a piece of cake for him like always," Alseace looked at Alecia as he held the sword tightly.
Suzie was looking out the window and the whole town became quiet and empty after the bell rang. She looked around and the atmosphere around the orphanage became so eerie because it was located at the furthest back of town.
Suzie squinted her eyes as she leaned her left ear toward the window because she heard something. It was a scream, and suddenly she heard screams one after another from different directions. She immediately went back and held the orphans in her arms.
Alseace and Alecia were confused as to why Suzie's hands were trembling. They both decided to look out the window and ignored Suzie's warning. They saw a fire in the distance, and they heard screams from all over town. Suddenly they saw the townspeople running toward the orphanage.
"Why are they here? They're supposed to be hiding in their house!" Alseace said as he walked out the door.
"Alseace! Don't!" Alecia tried to stop him from leaving.
A rock suddenly broke the glass window and almost hit Alecia in the head. Alseace who saw that was shocked and furious. He then opened the door and to his surprise, he saw townspeople were being slaughtered by humans, not monsters.
"What's happening? Why are they killing them?" Alseace's pupils were trembling and petrified by the scenery.
Suzie grabbed Alseace's hand and brought all the orphans away from the orphanage because it was too dangerous to stay inside.
On their way to save themselves, the path was blocked by a group of people riding a horse. They looked at Suzie and grinned as one of them slit her throat joyfully. Alseace saw Suzie's head roll over her shoulder and fall to the ground. He immediately drew his short sword and stabbed the man in the crotch because his hand could only reach that part.
The man fell from his horse and Alseace didn't hesitate to stab his neck, but then he got hit by the frightened horse and fell unconscious. When he opened his eyes, he had already lost sight of Alecia.
Alseace panicked as tears fell down his cheeks. "Please! Just give me an opportunity just like the others, God! Even if it's just a tiny bit! I would really appreciate it!" Alseace tried to stand up as he watched the people around him being slaughtered.
[You have been chosen as a Candidate!]
[God has gifted you the power to devour all opportunities!]
[You have received a [Leftover] skill]
Alseace was thrilled, but when he saw the skill he got, his smile disappeared.
"You're kidding, right?" Alseace asked in a trembling voice and forced a smile as he stared at the ability God gave him.
[Leftover: Candidate cannot gain Experience (EXP) from killing. Candidate can only gain EXP from dead bodies around the Candidate (100 Meters) that are not killed by the Candidate's hand. The amount of EXP that the Candidate will get is 0,0001% of the original EXP of the dead]
"What am I going to do with this?!" Alseace shouted at God who gave him the ability and glared at the cloudy sky as he held his sword.
Alseace chuckled in disbelief and started laughing desperately as the people around him screamed in agony. "You gave me an ability called Leftover?! Don't joke around!" Alseace screamed his lungs out.
[God gave you what you wished for, be grateful]
"Grateful? Like I-" Before Alseace could finish his sentence, lightning struck him.
Alseace opened his eyes and realized he was sent to a different place. To be exact, he was sent to another world in a modern world where tall buildings reached the sky. All the people around him were looking at him with confused looks and they pitied him for his condition.
"Brother Aluca? Sister Alecia?" Alseace looked around with a terrified look on his face. "Where am I?" Alseace eyes glimmered in tears as he held his sword with his trembling hands.
