‘Worse than demons?’ I joked, but Michael’s expression betrayed no hint of humor. He shook his head instead as he turned away from me, picking up the teacup that sat on the table in front of us and gently sipping. I waited anxiously for his reply, waiting, waiting, waiting for him to tell me that the cruel and harsh world I had been building up in my mind was not so cruel, not harsh, and that there was some semblance of reprieve left for us.
“Yes,” he said eventually, diminishing the hope that was beginning to die already in my chest. “Worse than demons.”
‘What could be worse than demons?’ I asked him shocked, flabbergasted at how easily he seemed to come to this conclusion. Was it not him that had told me the bane of his existence was demons? This thing he dedicated his entire life to, this thing that had wrought so much pain and suffering? What was worse than this?
