Chapter 48: The Confrontation

How the h*ll did he get up here? Did he spend days tracking me?

No. He wouldn’t have had to. He knows I live here. He could have guessed that this is where I was headed.

Still, why is he up here dealing with me? With Crowin’s raid coming up, doesn’t he have more important things to deal with?

I step up to the door and press my eye to the peephole. Paula is there. I don’t see the killer, but I don’t need to. The look on her face is enough to tell me someone is holding a gun to her head.

“Matt, are you awake?” Paula says again, knocking on the door with her aged, feeble hands.

“I can smell you,” I shout out the door.

“What?” Paula asks. “Matt, Matt please open the door. I’d like to see you.”

“I know he’s there, Paula.”

“Then open the door!” booms the killer’s voice. His voice is loud. Angry. Every word he says drips with hatred. “Open the door now, or she gets it!”

Paula gasps. I can hear her aged heart race. I can smell her fear; that cold sweat, laced with adrenaline.
